All you can drink bar in nana plaza

If my memory serves me correctly there used to be a bar in Nana plaza what was all you can drink for a certain price. Is that still there or has it stopped. If not is there any other places what are a bit lively and has good specials in that area in the late afternoon early evening. I am in BKK today to see Doug Stanhope and want to have a few beers before. This will be the first time I have been in that area for about 10 years.

OK thanks can you recommend another good day time bar in that area I don't care about girls. I used to go in a pool hall around that way but can't remember where.

Lollipop were recently advertising 69 baht on all local bottles, 4-8pm. It's generally happy hour on pubs late afternoon, so quite a few places with draft pints for around 100 baht.

You are thinking of the long lamented "Cathouse", on the 2nd level where "Straps" (ugh) is now located.
All the Beer Chang you could drink, 4pm to 8pm: B100  This was from 2001 to about 2005.

Doug, the owner got a very good deal from Chang which at the time was trying to break Singha's then 80% market share.
He was getting the Chang for about B13/bottle.  The place was understandably packed every evening from 4:01 to 8:05, them pretty empty thereafter.  Most customers stopped at 4 or 5 bottles but there were regulars that routinely packed in a dozen++ every night.  Doug made his money on lady-drinks, barfines and those that didn't want to drink Chang.  His rent was pretty low by today's standards.
Wholesale beer prices started going up, including Chang and he had to raise the price, first to B200, then B300 which kind of killed the attraction.  He sold out sometime around 2005/6.
Yeah that was it never took advantage of it myself wish I did now actually. Its not to bad actually most bars seem to have Draft for a 100THB a pint I was expecting a lot more then that to tell the truth.

Balcony Bar Nana Plaza has good prices on Thai whiskey and other drinks all day long. Cannot name prices at present as it has been about a year since I was there.

Ah yes, those were the days indeed. Good summary, dddave, though you missed mentioning the fact that added to the packed-to-the-gills bar was the (unwanted) free entertainment: a table of crusty, angry Brits that would regularly pummel the <deleted> out of each other after about 10 Changs or so, luckily usually taking it outside, haha.

I also remember that the staff was just great, and I always made sure to tip them generously, given the large amount of <deleted> they had to put up with from some of the scuzziest and most demanding cheap charlies you would ever want to meet.

And not only was the Chang dirt-cheap, but tequila shots cost 10 baht (or was it 25?), if memory serves, and that includes if you bought them for the staff. Ah yes, good times.

Yeah I thought I remember there being cheap shots as well but 10THB that's 2 cheap if you ask me no wonder there was fighting.

Excellent memory lane post, thanks guys!

Changboozled Brits and cheap tequila shots... what could possibly go wrong eh?
Haha not a good ideal to mix Brits 10THB tequila shots and a time limit on cheap Drinks. I surprised no one died, Which reminds me last night there was a guy drinking Stella snakebites I doubt it if his girlfriend got home alive.

Yes, the big table; not just Brits though, a few Aussies and Kiwis squeezing in.  One of the bunch would always arrive before 4pm to secure the table.  One day, they were late and some other group was sitting there when they arrived.  They tried to bully the people off the table claiming it was "theirs".  Doug, to his credit wasn't having any of it and let them know in no uncertain terms that they did not "Own" any table.  Of course, they got into huff claiming they were his best customers (Hardly, they always drank beyond the break-even point, were loud and rude and on top of it all, terrible tippers) and declared they would never return. Doug was happy to have them gone but their thirst for cheap beer overcame their indignation and they soon started drifting back but by then, Doug had removed the big, round table.

Not much of a daytime drinking scene in BKK these days, the *Soi 8 pub / Kiwi bar in (surprisingly) Soi 8 might be worth a try in happy hour. *Can never remember which is the new name and which the old.

While on the subject can anyone recommend a decent daytime/happy hour pub, i.e. one with a bit of craic or atmosphere.

Cathouse was home to more fights than all other bars in Nana put together and the cheap beer was the reason.  I also recall Doug sold Cathouse to a couple of Danes and then fled (because he did not own the lease to the bar which was actually owned by Boss Hogg).  That must have been around 2006?  Doug then turned up a few years later looking to run another bar but not sure if that ever happened.

But how many of those special promotion places sell real liquor and not fake one.

I would be suspicious when they sell JW Black for 80 baht.

A 1 litre bottle of JW Black costs about 1,600 baht wholesale. 40 x 25ml shots in the bottle at 80 baht each is 3,200 baht.

That's ok for promo pricing.
