Surin teen raped by ‘drunken youths’ as sexual assault scrutinised

THREE YOUTHS were in police custody on Sunday over the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old girl in their village in Surin’s Sikhoraphum district last week, while another suspect remained on the run.

Police said they would apply for court-ordered detention periods for the three suspects pending their investigations, Ban Hae village headman Bai Kannura said  on Sunday. The other suspect had promised to surrender to police later, he said.

The three young men reportedly told police that they had been drinking alcohol at a roadside area at 11pm on March 26 and saw the girl riding pillion on her 16-year-old male friend’s motorcycle.

The drunken youths allegedly stopped the motorcycle and dragged the girl into the middle of a rice field, where they raped her despite her friend’s pleas for them to stop. After they finished, they let the girl and her friend go.

On March 27, the girl went to file a police complaint along with her female friend, as her 63-year-old grandmother was being treated for a chronic ailment and her factory-worker parents had not yet return to Surin.

The parents work at a drinking water factory in Chon Buri and send Bt2,000 a month to support the girl.

Pol Major Wittawat Kaewlao sent the girl for physical examination at a hospital – the results of which were still pending.

The complaint led to an investigation and police arresting the three youths on Saturday but a fourth suspect fled the village.

The girl, who dropped out of school at Mathayom 2 level, and her family, following the suspects’ arrest on Saturday, sought advice from local media about how to receive justice.

The girl’s father said he was saddened by the vicious attack on his daughter and wanted to press charges against the rapists.

As the gang rape reportedly stemmed from the culprits’ drunkenness, the link between alcohol and crime was highlighted.

In a 2016 study by Thai Health Promotion Foundation researcher Dr Orathai Waleewong has cited interviews with juveniles in detention facilities, reporting that 40.8 per cent of them claimed to commit crimes within five hours of alcohol consumption.

The study also cited crimes committed by juveniles reportedly under the influence of alcohol: 55.9 per cent of offences against life and liberty, 46.2 per cent of rapes and sexual assaults, 41.4 per cent of weapon and explosive offences, 35.3 per cent of thefts, 31.3 per cent of social disturbances and 29.2 per cent of the drug offences.

Sexual assaults have been in the spotlight amid a debate about safety ahead of Songkran.

The sad excuse of beeing drunk at the time of the crime, is getting a little bit over used. I mean, how drunk to you really have to be too stop a motorcycle with a girl and her boyfriend, gang rape the girl in a rice field in front of her boyfriend and when completed let them go? I my opinion that would be in a state of almost unconsious, which would result in very poor performance capacity. Little stupid boys! I hope they get to spend long time inside for this.

It’s the fall back excuse of the new millennium. Drugs, alcohol or a tough upbringing, it never ends.

Western society’s legal system is ham strung with these constant ‘excuses’ for poor or anti social behaviour constantly being wheel out. Thailand is obviously no different.

Sad indictment on society this day & age

Drunkenness is the brake-failure of sexual assault.

From my humble experience, rape seems to be a far spread past time up there. Had two cases in my friends family.

Luckily they didn't kill her.

Depending on their age, they might not even go behind the bars and would likely repeat the same offence.

If the girls family had the money and time, it would be nice to hear that they find out who these

guys are, meet them and take away one ball each.  It would make these guys know that if

they rape again they could lose the other one, and it would also show them that

rape is not tolerated.

Geezer

Really - they have to interview her with a photographer taking her picture?  A rape victim?

Animals in human skin blaming alcohol for their actions. A 5 yrs jail term each would teach them a lesson..... maybe

Thailand is a very strange country. But it's hot you know, and it's very uncomfortable going outside with those tight brown uniforms to arrest someone. Have pity on them, please.

Be better if they were given a compulsory sex change operation; they could play with each other as long as they wanted; that would solve the problem of them raping again, ****** scumbags!

They have "proved their man(?)hood" - now cut their dicks off! That should send a message to future rapists. Draconian yes, but nothing else is working.

if was my daughter no police. l kill all 3 and take my family to another country. l don't care kill them all

Arrest the headman for interfering and who needs these head wanders anyway

In the UK drunkenness is no defense to a crime, but depending on circumstances, can mitigate the penalty.

But it here the rules appear different and drunkenness seems to be used as an excuse. Primitive justice in a primitive system devoid of individual responsibility.

I'l get the high philosophy over first. Rape derives from a culture of impunity and male privilege.

Castration may violate human rights but chemical castration might work. Just like heroin addicts must show up to the same clinic every dasy to get their does of medicine, this could be applied the rapists, too.

No shows go back to jail. Incidentally, I don't think, no matter how young, these boys should be sent to any pansy prison. Some tough guys will teach them what rape victims feel like.
