I've been away from Ch Mai for 2 yrs & need to know if the neighborhood where I lived before is still as nice as it was. It didn't have any of this stuff, like I want to avoid. -- illegal drug users (like in the developed country where I am now), the homeless, bums, beggars... No judgements, just want my peaceful pretty life back - a soi off of Huay Kaew Rd., near Huay Kaew Residence, Central Mkt.,Kad Suan Kaew,  Lotus Hotel.  (I'm a writer and that area works well for me. Not like what everybody likes, but I liked it..)  My expat friends have left for the hot weather so am asking here.  Thank you.

The only real change is the serious increase in traffic congestion. There is a gradual modernisation and takeover by restaurants etc going on but it still retains much of its character.

I would have thought "compassion" would be a good quality for a writer to have.  Of course your writings may have nothing to do with the subject of "human nature".

Please don't misunderstand me, I'm more than aware that a certain type of enviourment is important to you for your work.....what I really mean is....."It's not only what one says that is important.....but the way that one says it" ?

Haven't noticed any change. Very few beggars, and they seem to home in on Loi Kroh where the tourist are.

Thank you all very much.  I'd hoped this was what was happening.

I'm not big on defending myself, but the one person who was judgmental, even denigrating my writing, my lack of compassion:  you try doing refugee work when educated women are getting acid thrown in their faces; you call me names after living alone in a rust belt city  in the US for a couple of years.  Those nice street people can hurt a 70-yr old I attach a photo from my window. Horribly sad.  I've had enough. I want to come back to Ch Mai!

Looks like a nice safe place, nobody has ripped off the shoes or other quality items just laying on the sidewalk in the photo.

Nah, you lost me after compassion ??

I haven't read about many acid attacks on uneducated women, let alone educated women, in Chiang Mai..

How do you know that the guy, calling you names, lived in a rust belt city ??

I hope your writing is proof read before publication :)

You gain nothing from trying to defend yourself on here. There are some that love to attack other posters for the most illusory of reasons.

I just try to ignore them, as they probably delight in getting a response to their goading.

The best advice I've ever read on TV.

Beggars and homeless problem in cm? Safety?

How's Detroit these days?

It's awesome- you can buy a huge house with the change dug out from under your sofa cushions.  It might be a bit of a fixer-upper...;)

In fact, it was on my list 5 years ago. i chose to relocate to cm instead because I could not stomach the crime issue in Detroit.

Detroit is a hell-hole- I thought I wasn't going to survive stopping for gas when I drove through a few years ago after visiting my alma mater in Ann Arbor and deciding to drive to Windsor...;)

You're right. Trolls just exist.

Thanks guys, for all the help.  I lived in the Central Mall Huay Kaew area for years; & you're right:  construction is the main problem.  I'm going to check places out before renting.  This rust belt city where I am is a safe place, in a weird way.  People don't steal your shoes.  Not nearly as bad as other cities.  Only 1 shelter for an increasing homeless population  & it's cold.  Will be glad to get back to CM.   And yes, I'll even  use beta readers and hire an editor to read my book before it goes live.
