Video: Who's the big man now? Cop caught threatening shopkeeper at store

A disgruntled customer who is a policeman was caught on a camera video making threats against a mobile phone shop owner.

The cop - who Manager said is attached to the Phayakkha Phumphisai station in Mahasarakham in Thailand's north-east - is angry about some purchase or business that he has at the store.

He uses his influence as a policeman to threaten the shopkeeper. He asks to see her tax records and says that if she hasn't been paying tax he will close her down.

The woman says she doesn't have the records to hand and the cop eventually walks off.

In a second video he comes back with uniformed cops who look a little sheepish.

He repeats his need to see tax records or the woman will be in trouble.

Netizens were in no doubt that this was a clear case of a shakedown with Manager intimating that the plain clothes cop had used his position inappropriately in the matter.

It is not yet known if his superiors have seen the videos or if the cop has an explanation for his actions.

Watch this space.

To the average person, this sort of behaviour is considered disgraceful. To the average cop, it is simply a perk of the job.

To the average person this kind of thing is considered normal.

Chronic bullyism-either explicit or implicit-is the norm in Thailand.

Maybe..just maybe..social media will slowly change it but a potential Defamation case  is waiting around every corner.

Very brave person that shop owner.

That's a big statement, is there enough clear detail for you to make your specific comment?

Why are people here so intimidated by a uniform.  The cop has no right to inspect tax records.  Not in his jurisdiction.  Different government department.  I would have told him to get his body out of my shop, taken his number/name and reported him to his superiors.

The reply should have been "You will have to ring up my lawyer, he has my tax records". In the few altercations I have had with the police ( getting them to move their backsides and do something ) I have found that they are very wary when the word lawyer is mentioned.

Deeply ingrained into the culture. Anyone at all in a uniform all too often uses it to belittle and intimidate others. And that is because from birth Thais are told their place in society, and there is always someone higher up the social ladder ready to bully you. So, naturally, when the bullied have the chance to bully others that is what they do. A very backward society. I come from the UK and that kind of behaviour all but vanished there centuries ago.

Can you just imagine the other 'crap' he pulls routinely????????  Him and many like him.............

Not to discredit the few very decent cops who we all commend on occasions......... But the likes of this guy are much to plentiful........ and seldom caught or challenged............

It appears that the filming is done so as him not to notice................

They will probably penalize the shop owner for 'Defamation' now............. LOL...............

TIT... (This is Thailand).......... OR ........... TITT  (This is Thailand Today)............. Currently a well endowed police state, endowed with the likes of this cop............

Followed by a court case for defamation.

I showed the videos to my Thai wife............. she said she saw on Thai TV that this cop has already been transfered to another post or maybe inactive post pending investigation..........

Let's hope that justice will prevail (doubtful in Thai under current 'Police State regime') but let's hope for the 'Right side' to prevail.............. "God Bless" modern cameras such as the one that captured this video..........

This is simply a reminder to ALL OF US........... about how much of this crap is just 'everyday abuse' in Thailand by those who are being paid to 'serve and protect' the people.............

There are MANY good Thai cops and we hear about them 'sometimes'............ but seems that the good ones are in 'Minority' compared to the ones like this guy....... and it seems there is no (or little) deterrent to stop the bad ones.............. What 'good' has the present gov't done to correct this?????????? .............. Nothing............  Submarines (etc.) are distracting the present Gov't from even noticing this common occurance............

My Thai wife has 2 older brothers in the (RTP) police in Korat............ And I think that they are nearly as bad as this guy............ so I do have a bit of personal 'insight'.....................
