I'm 6' 1" and I've never seen a balcony railing in Bangkok that was at waist height on me, they are always at least up to my stomach.

I'd love to see photographic evidence of all these super low railings people keep claiming to see.

Building code in Florida calls for 42 inches high and a 4 inch sphere cant go through spindles. Actually in Florida stairs are more dangerous and if not to code they make up the majority of lawsuits. Stairs in Hailand are insane, no two are the same.

Never seen a low one either.

As for Ivy residences I can't imagine myself falling over it even if completely wasted.

View Taley next to Central Festival should be the benchmark. Home of the most jumpers most likely. Happens allot of places people are wasted. Spring breakers in Florida every year, Daytona, Panama City Beach, Lauderdale. Many times they miss the pool.

Tolerance in the culture ok, but legal tolerance....not.

I had a student last year who is going to get the change from man to woman. Even after the change her/hisThai ID will always be male. In the eyes of most Thais she'll always be male or ladyboy, not a woman. I think trans gendered people are more accepted in the west than here. Thailand accepts kathoey, but treat them differently than men or women. That is not equality.

As you will doubtless have observed from some of the postings here, not everybody accepts that one can change from a man into a woman (or vice versa) by taking hormones, having surgery or undergoing any other form of treatment.

This happens obviously to be the view of successive Thai administrations which are old-fashioned enough to believe that biological sex is what determines gender - not one's personal feelings of being "trapped in the wrong body".

This is in sharp contrast to attitudes in the  "progressive" West, where public policy is increasingly being shaped around the assumption that, when it comes to gender, biology and science can be consigned to dustbin of history.

Today, in states across the US and Canada, anyone who chooses can, irrespective of their natal sex, take their pick of a newly-minted menu of over 70 "non-binary" genders and insist on being referred to correctly from a long list of pronouns which, if incorrectly used, can lead to a fine or even imprisonment.

Where, one wonders, will it all end?

This is in sharp contrast, of course, with what is happening in the UK, the US and other parts of the  "progressive" West, where public policy is increasingly being shaped around the  dubious assumption that, when it comes to gender, biology and science are irrelevant and anyone who chooses can, irrespective of their natal sex, take their pick of a newly-minted menu of over 70 "non-binary" genders.

Biology and science are not irrelevant.  It is not a "dubious assumption" that people may have a difference in their brains that don't match their genitalia.

People don't choose to be gay or trans gendered, inter sexed any more than they choose to be born with leukemia or MS. <deleted> happens they don't "choose" it.

Why should the report refer to the katoey as "she" when he is clearly a man?

A man in woman's clothes.

Believe-able.  I've seen some apartment and condo balcony railings that don't even come up to my waist, and I'm only 5"8-1/2 (174cm).

If you were drunk, or even just "tipsy", going over the railing is almost guaranteed.

Absolutely right,  many times I stayed one meter far behind those low railings, I'm slightly sensitive to vertigo, so not only balconies in some hotel the windows coming only to my waist I certainly dare not open them. I had never seen this dangerousness in other countries.

Personally I don't think its a problem for people to take their pic, as long as the ones they are with know about it. I see absolutely not how it can harm anyone.

Anyway not sure this guy did not know.. not all Dutch are straight.. some might just want to try something different.

I am assuming this ladyboy was a sex worker. Might be wrong but statistically speaking a strong possibility. Seems to me in the vast majority of these falling cases it is the customer flying. Cant recall a case where the sex worker fell and the falang was in the bathroom madding his/her own business.

Entering the woman's showers whilst explaining that one feels like a female in a man's body  - would make for a very interesting test case.

Sure, but how about a ladyboy post op op in a mans shower ?

Anyway there are not that many group showers anymore

It's so obvious that the sex worker was in the bathroom when the "accident" happened.

If he got a shock from finding out he went with a ladyboy in the room he could have left by the front door!

Lots of alcohol and balconies are a very dangerous mix. Only the ladyboy knows what happened BUT the Thai police should be investigating this, not just taking someones word for it.

Personally I would be very suspicious of foul play.

RIP...No age at all :-(

If in doubt about how to address a transgender person politely ask them how they would prefer to be addressed.

Was that so hard?

I address them how I want to address them, if they have a problem with that , thats there problem and not my problem

What about Heshe then?

I think the age of the lady makes it more likely they were not working.

Also, if the ladyboy is being truthful, they would not know what happened either.

Here's my take on the lady boy deal here in Thailand. First of all I don't have a dog in the hunt nor a problem with the whole transgender deal. Be it genetic or whatever I really have no clue why but one thing I am absolutely sure about is if a man has his penis and balls cut off and thrown in the trash he is all in about becoming a she. More power to her, cant be more committed than that! As for many of the lady boys in Pattaya I think it could be less commitment to become full on transgender and more about economics. Just looking for a way to make a living that's easier than traditional Thai males with little education. For sure lady boys, both the entertainers and the sex workers, put much more effort into attaining a more marketable product than the average bar girl. In many cases it pays better to be a lady boy in Thailand rather than being a farm worker or delivering 50 pound bags of ice all day. What does this have to do with the jumper? Maybe nothing, he just fell over the rail. But more likely he freaked out and would have been better served doing what he came to Thailand for in the first place and that is taking a walk on the wild side and enjoying the entertainment and entertainers Highland provides.

I can't help but thinking about that story a little over one year ago where the foreigner "jumped" from the balcony and when the police came there were 3 or 4 ladyboys, all sweating.  Sure sounded like there was quite a struggle that had gone on.  They said the foreigner jumped out the window.

People with the same attitude used to use the "n" word for black people, and all sorts of other words for people of differing ethnicities. Was that "there"(sic) problem?

Oh ,get real the N word is offensive, being called by what gender I fell you are , is not offensive (unless you desperately WANT to get offended and feel like a poor little victim).
