Fire damaged the factory and head office of Asalon Sofa in Samut Prakan early Monday.

Police got the call at 2am and fire-fighting crews arrived on about 10 engines at the factory on Soi Kingkaew 25/1 in Bang Plee district.

It took an hour to extinguish the blaze after it engulfed the single-floor factory and spread to the three-storey office building and showroom closer to the roadside.

Employee Dilok Kaewbao, 43, who was spending the night on the office roof, said the smell of smoke woke him up and he saw the blaze spreading from the factory and ran for his life.

Police said the British owner of the factory lives 10 kilometres away.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

With a foreign owner perhaps the police will rule that the factory committed suicide.

Case closed.
