In Thailand about 14% of ALL women work in the sex trade at some time.  So every "bar" owner is a sex trafficker?

 

I mean, really, of course he is not allowed to "work" without a permit in Thailand, but come on....every tourist that comes to Thailand for sex finds it, be it from the hooker herself, or from an intermediate, usually the bar owner.  So just how is this different?

A friend sent me the page. And I read the blinkered, naive comments by 'contributors', and the calumnious headlines that these 'intellects' were charmed by. And it disgusted me.

I dont see how he actually provided help beyond buying him a meal.
 
It seems more to me like he is trying to interject himself into the whole situation, for  whatever reason, by visiting a man he does not know in jail.
 
If the motive was truly altruistic i supect he might just have kept his charitable visit quiet, his posting here does not seem to aid the gentleman in jail in any way.

What I offered or actually provided is irrelevant, that fact is that I took time out of my day to drive 1.5hrs to the jail in blistering heat on a motorcycle to be of service. My reason is purely humanitarian. Why I posted is questionable, maybe even to myself. Surely second hand word of mouth has some merit, certainly more than the vile accounting dreamed up in some of these posts.
Finally, even tho we have only met, not been aquainted, I pity the fool to a degree. The wolves here will do what they will with what they have. I have no agenda, I was curious enough to search for the truth, and reveal what I found. Who the hell set to languish in a Thai prison wouldn't be comforted by a visit from someone they barely ever met. His crime is not so heinous that I am repulsed. Furthermore I was urged by our mutual aquaintance, a fine moral businesswoman with whom I am good friends.

The women are Burmese. Trafficking is moving people across borders, often against their will, for illegal purposes. Hence, it's trafficking.

Thank you, yes, against their will... and prostitution is illegal, though when I lived in Chaing mai, that really did not seem to the the case at all.

Here is what I thought trafficking is:

I guess it can be called trafficking then, sort of, after all if you remove all the words like force, and threat, then yes, prostitution is listed therein, yet then it must be the same as what, 5,000 bars in Thailand do routinely.

 

I just find some of the responses here odd, have there been a huge influx of Baptists  since I last visited, or perhaps a wave of born-again converts that appears to be so eager to point fingers at what (I'm guessing and of course, I'm innocent) about half of us here, partake or have partaken in.  After all, if you have EVER paid, then you are a trafficker--uh, sort of by one of the three definitions. (sort of...maybe)

@wcoast:  Thanks for posting and thanks for taking the time to make the arduous journey to see him.   He's in a pretty unenviable position.   

 

Like some of the posters, I don't think what he did was all that terrible, but it is against the law and foreigners need to be very careful when living in a foreign country.    If you look at some of the things that happen to people who travel through the ME with prescription medication, you get an idea of how strict some places can be.   

 

He helped bring people across a border for illegal purposes; prostitution is illegal in Thailand.   From a legal point of view I don't think he has much of a leg to stand on.   He has a Facebook page advertising it and he accepted money for it.

 

He was an easy mark and he was actively involved.    He's not a lot different than the police picking up the guy selling a small quantity of drugs.   They are easy picking.

 

Hopefully he will receive fair treatment from the Judicial system.   He is not a fish in the troubled pond, but he is far from being a big fish.
