Chiang Rai hit by two mild earthquakes

By The Nation

Two very mild earthquakes happened in Chiang Rai’s Mae Lao district late on Tuesday night, the Seismology Bureau reported.

The bureau, which is under the Meteorological Department, said the first quake had a magnitude of 2.7 and happened at the depth of 2 kilometres, with its epicentre located in a rice field 7 or 8 kilometres southwest of the popular Wat Rong Khun.

The bureau said local villagers felt the tremor but no damage was reported.

The second quake, with the magnitude of 1.6, happened at the depth of 3 kilometres not far from the first one.

Nikornchai Popluechai, chief of the Chiang Rai quake monitoring centre, said the two quakes happened on a branch fault of the Mae Lao fault line that caused a quake of 6.3 magnitude on May 5, 2014.

hit by a mild earthquake , sounds a bit like getting rammed by a car doing 2 mph.

I felt nothing stirring in my bedroom late last night . C/Rai is about 20 mins drive away.

I live in Mae Lao , slept like a baby last night . Ask the Moderator he lives just up road from me , maybe he felt it.
