An 11-month-old boy has drowned after he slipped out of a duck-shaped rubber ring while swimming with his mother in a reservoir popular with tourists in Phitsanulok.

Police were informed of the incident at the Nam Huay Chamroo in Moo 11 village, Tambon Nong Ka Thao, Nakhon Thai district, at 3.30pm on Sunday.

The mother, Sita Phatthara, 31, had rented a bamboo raft to go out to the middle of the reservoir, where she swam with her toddler.

She had placed him into the inflatable swim ring but the boy slipped out.

The raft operator jumped into the water to try to save the boy but could not reach him in time.

The boy’s body was retrieved on Sunday night.

Very tragic, but you have to question the decision to go out to the middle of a reservoir with an 11-month old toddler wearing a rubber swim ring.  I'm all for kids learning to swim but it needs to be done in very shallow water with constant attention by a supervising adult.

Tragic stupidity beyond belief

This is not a case of learning how to swim for a one year but irresponsibility of a supervising parent...

she did not do due diligence of the what if game...

what is a rubber ring vs a life preserver? Sound similar to a parent who holds a child with one hand and ride a motorcycle with the other....

lack of safety mindset at play....this was not an accident but a bad outcome incident due to negligence on so many fronts...

wont happen b/c people have sympathy for the mother but really a case of child neglect leading to death....

The only thing to really trust when teaching a child how to swim, is a pair of responsible adult hands and one of these poly otter suits. My son didn't go near any body of water without it, and can now swim unaided.

My 3 kids started with one of these to start swimming 56 years ago from the age of three. And I supervised them. I have made sure all my Thai nieces and nephews learned how to swim. Again, under my supervision. To me, being able to swim is more important than any academic  subject. Being a maths genius will not save you from drowning if you can't swim. I feel sorry for the mother. She will live her mistake for ever. RIP

Absolutely right, Gandtee, singularly THE most important thing a person can learn, the difference between life and death ! The second most important thing to learn would probably be not to play an accordion in civilized company ?

So sad to hear this, learning to swim has to be done in shallow water.

Some people just don't think about the consequences of their actions.

hmmmm ..... something sounds "fishy" here

Is this meant to be funny?

This was an INFANT not a TODDLER. Toddlers are from two years old.  RIP little one and it was unfortunate this time around you were born into stupidity, good luck with the next life.

This is not tragic. This is normal intelligence in this area of the world.

Fishy? Someone could have said the mother was in over her head and would have been right on two accounts....
