Looking For Audio File Conversion Software

Thanks for the suggestions Chrisdoc and MCJM. Downloaded both but decided to use foobar2000, at least initially, as it seems much more straightforward to use. Files are converting now. Will then load them onto a USB stick and use in car. Will let you know the outcome.

Previously used some software called Bigasoft but the free version proved less than satisfactory - most of the tracks I converted were incomplete and the sound quality was questionable (although maybe I was imagining that).

Looking forward to the Foobar2000 output.

There is a free download called Audacity. Should do it.

I've used Audacity before, and it works fine, including for editing and resaving MP3 files. But I've only ever used it for single files at a time. Does it also batch convert???

No idea sorry, but according to this it should do. https://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=27633

Please note: I haven't tried it

You also can try this

LameXP is a free multi-format audio file converter that supports a variety of output formats, including MP3, AAC/MP4, Ogg Vorbis, Opus, as well as FLAC, and an even higher number of input formats. It also supports batch processing and can utilize multiple processor cores.

Audacity is fine if you want to edit or process the sound files.

But for simple batch file conversion, and tag changing, (and indeed as a general audio media player that handles just about every format known - including unusual ones like DSF and SACD isos - and also works as a UPNP/DLNA server/renderer) nothing beats Foobar as far as I know.

Used Foobar to convert 978 m4a files to mp3 and am very happy with the outcome. Conversion took about 1 hour and the sound quality is good. Easy to use so will continue on with it.

Thanks to everyone for their contributions to this thread.
