Charging laptop whilst camping?

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if those external power banks are any good for charging your laptop say 3x or more on one charge? Are they dangerous for blowing up the laptop if you get a very high rated one?

Do they sell them in Thailand?

Any small solar power units worthwhile for charging just a laptop for touring on a bicycle?

Cheers for any help

The power banks for mobile phones work on the USB port (5V).

Laptops are charged via a separate connector (AC adapter) on much higher voltage like 19 V.

The battery of my laptop shows 10.4 V DC (consists of multiple cells internally).

So for a conventional laptop these power banks are no option.

"Conventional": I read there are new laptops that can be charged through USB-C connectors.

If your notebook battery has i.e. 10Ah then you need (perfect scenario) an external battery with 10Ah to charge it one time full.

If the external battery has 50Ah then you can charge it 5 times full.

There are ideal numbers which will never happen but you get the idea.

Phones have a relative small internal battery and a "big" power bank will be able to fully charge them several times.

But your notebook has a much bigger battery and it needs much more power than a phone so that external power bank would be really BIG and heavy. And like previously mentioned a 5V power bank won't be able to charge your notebook, at least not without additional parts.

Probably the easiest and maybe cheapest solution is to buy several notebook batteries and charge them in the notebook. And then take them with you on your trip.

If you enjoy camping and bicycling, much better to change over to something lighter and more portable - a tablet or a smartphone with a decent screen size. Not travelled with a large device for years now.
