Coming back into land with a bit more on bikes ..

Ducati F1 V8 engine .. Ain't sure 'bout that Duke have no need to go near F1 and its very architecture isn't really F1 ..

R E the Desmo posts above ..

Another form of valve actuation is the

Electro mechanical servo valve ... This has been looked at by various manufacturers for years and in principle does extend the future of the I C engine .. In essence the valves are opened/closed by EM solenoids controlled by a processor taking input from numerous engine sensors .. Advantages are the ability to change the amount of lift , the duration of open/close time and the actual timing itself can be altered as in opening earlier or later or fully variable .. I ain't saying this is good or bad .. On one hand it will make engines more efficient and powerful alongside their conventional bro's but on the other hand engines will become almost totally electronically controlled requiring very little maintenance which is not good news for service sector ..

The aviation side reinforces my point on the sheer number of British manufacturers from a page or so ago, though not to the extent that 1,200+ motorcycle manufacturers did.

Famous RAF aircraft of WW1?

Camel - Sopwith

WW2?

Spitfire - Supermarine

Lancaster - Avro

Mosquito - DeHavilland

Hurricane - Hawker

Wellington - Vickers

Post WW2?

Lightning - English Electric

Vulcan - Avro

Victor - Handley Page

Valiant - Vickers

Harrier - Hawker

Some of those were absorbed into BAe, but all formed by engineers, or family businesses, working away at a problem.  You could add all the less famous workhorses to that, too; Bristol, Fairey Aviation, Short Brothers, Gloster, BAC....

To me, though the Vulcan is a beautiful aircraft, and gets the plaudits, my favourite V Bomber was the Victor.  An amazing plane, especially front on.

And, when they ceased to be used as bombers, they were refitted as tankers - the very ones that refuelled the Vulcans on the Falklands raids, and were used in that capacity as recently as the first Gulf War.

Least we forget the true purpose of these beautiful machines, here's a Yellow Sun Mark 2 hydrogen bomb being loaded into a Victor, though this is just a dummy. "Yellow Sun" (it's not hard to imagine what inspired the name), was the name of the casing, the actual bomb inside it being a "Red Snow" 1.45 Megaton thermonuclear device (Which replaced the earlier "Red Beard").  As I said in another thread, gotta admire a company / organisation that goes to the trouble of naming its products, rather than using random strings of letters and numbers - the US equivalent of Red Snow being the B28.

And the one that got away the BAC TSR2 .. Arguably the most advanced warplane of the day it suffered crippling overspend on the budget and a lot of political in fighting of the day over that seen it cancelled mid 60's after just 3 had been built to be replaced by the F111 and later Phantom from over the water ..

a TS' giving it biglicks at take off and in flight ..

No.

Vomit.

Please stop defiling this wonderful thread with stock garbage.

If you have'nt got anything of historical, classic or customized classy interest to contribute, F##k off.

Oh and the red mystery Italian?

Lambretta.

And very tasteful too.

It's classic, only 2656 models were produced of this type, it's fast, has a drive shaft, plus a few more extras I've created and it's mine. Now go and fu__ off yourself!!!
