Asus Phone.

Featured Replies

My smartphone is only used for watching movies and listening to music. I am trying to download apps from Google Play.

Although my wifi is on, I cannot get to Google Play. Is this because there is no simcard on my device?

I am only doing this for entertainment on long journeys because it has a bigger screen than my normal smartphone.

So if I have to put a simcard in it then OK.

Could you take the simcard out of your normal smartphone and lend it to the Asus to get Google Play?

I think there is two simcards in my smart phone, one is not used, so what I'm

asking is, if I put the unused one in my Asus, will my wifi work?

I have tried to take the unused one out to try it but it is stuck, and if I take it to the phone shop in my village, they cannot speak a word of English.

Access to Google Play Store does not require having a SIM in a mobile phone. You can use a mobile phone with wifi only, no SIM, and still access the Google Play Store just fine.

Obviously, or perhaps not, you do have to have a Google account set up on the phone in question and be signed into your Google account on that particular mobile phone, in order to access the Play Store.

And, the phone has to have the Google Play Store app installed along with one or two other related Google apps (Google Play Services) in order to function properly.

I don't think a sim card is needed to connect to Google Play. I had a tablet that only had wifi and I was able to use google play.

Are you able to connect to anything else on the internet?

As said you do need a google account setup on the phone under accounts in the settings.

As others have said, no SIM card is needed to use the internet through wifi.

You did not make clear: if the Google Play Store app already installed on your phone? On most Asus phones it usually comes pre-installed

Have you set up a Google account?  Did you perhaps inadvertently uninstall or force stop Google Services in Settings?  Any chance the phone might be set to "Airplane Mode?

Which Asus phone and what version of Android?

Yes, Ubonjoe , TallGuyJohninBKK, and dddave are correct that you don't need to put in a simcard to use wifi.  Sorry, I didn't think that out.  And it seems like they are steering you in the right direction to get things working.  Good one, dddave, about airplane mode.

Hardware guy that I am I did want to ask you about that stuck simcard.  I am not one to recommend rough treatment to a simcard.  I have seen people on Youtube cut simcards with scissors or heat them with candles.  Short of extreme measures what have you done to unstick the second simcard?  Also I would guess that sign language would be sufficient at your village phone shop to get the tech to take out the unused simcard from your normal smartphone.  If it's a working simcard I think it might be good to locate it permanently in your Asus phone; so then you'd have two working phones.

I do have Google apps on my Asus although I don't know if it is Google Play Services. I will see if I can set up an account. I have GMail but no password.

I will look through everything you have said, but I only know it is powered by Android, and don't know about any other versons.

It is an older Asus, but not sure which model.

ASUS smartphones, including those sold in Thailand, typically come with all the core Google apps pre-installed, including the Play Store, Play Services, Gmail, etc etc...

When you turn on/use the phone for the first time as a new phone, usually you're prompted to sign into an existing Google account or create a new Google account on the phone. That account or accounts then become the accounts that you access the Play Store thru.

Do you see an app titled "Play Store" in the app drawer of your phone?  And if you do, what happens when you tap the "Play Store" icon?  Also, either in your app drawer or sometimes only visible under Settings / Apps, there also should be an app listed called "Play Services."

For Android version: go to "Settings", scroll to bottom..."About Phone".  Tap that and the Android version should be among the listed specifications.

No, I cannot connect to any internet, I will check up on what you said in your last sentence. I have a GMail account, but I am asked for a password which I do not seem to need to get in to my GMail account, like what you need for Hotmail and Yahoo.

It could be that your settings are for data only instead of wifi. Check the connections settings.

Your google apps/play subscription is linked to your google account. It is possible that your account settings have somehow been corrupted. I had this happen on an older ASUS phone a couple of years ago where the 'My Apps' wasn't available when I launched the App store (Google Play). The only way around it was to do a factory reset, re-register with my gmail account and after it was all done, the My Apps history was all there.

Your Gmail is set to open automatically but for the Google play store you need to activate a Google account by entering your gmail password.  If you do not know your Gmail pw, click on the "forgot password" option (usually in blue) and go through the option of setting a new pw.

I had this same connectivity problem on the Line app, somehow I'd got it set to work on data only. Took ages to find what the problem was on my Vivo, the settings to fix it were in a completely different place on the phone from the app settings.
