Not sure where you think corruption's involved here but remember in Phuket, Grab taxis are all licensed taxis, hence the higher prices than elsewhere.

But 410 baht for that is ridiculous, especially as you'd have to walk to Rat-u-thit to pick the taxi up anyway!

Why? the Expat is accessible to taxis and other vehicles- not that I'd take one down to SW anyway as Bangla would be a Walking Street by the time it opened.

Sorry. Read it as SW to Expat.

Friends of mine who live and work in Malaysia came to visit Phuket for a few days and planned on using Grab like they do at home. They soon found out that ordering a taxi or tuktuk through their hotel or flagging one down was always cheaper than Grab.

some taxi rides in patong can be longer than expected due to the one way streets.

Exactly, when I was there minimum price for a Tuk Tuk was 200 Baht, Taxi 300 Baht before even moving.

and did you pay it?

I paid 200 Baht for a Tuk Tuk, I could see my Condo, a short walk but I half a dozen bags of shopping. It took a good 5 minutes as there was no direct route and we had negotiate the traffic round the one way system.

The rip offs in Phuket are a disgrace. Glad I'm living in Bangkok and don't have to deal with the obnoxious taxi mafia down there.

Yesterday I paid 249 Baht from DonMuang airport to my home in Bangna. 40 kilometers. Metered taxi.

(Grab in Bangkok gives roughly the same price)

Oh  well - what do you expect hailing a taxi from Suzi Wong Ago go - if you are leaving what is probably a glorified brothel - they might jack up the price a bit  .

I spent Jan till May working in Indonesia and as I came back I was used to call Grab Taxis. Never heard of them before but in Jakarta and other places in Indonesia they became my common Transportation, Home Cleaning, Food delivery etc...  Superb, reliable, fast and cheap.

back in Thailand I spotted this Grab sign and thought, great here we go.

2900 Baht plus Highway fee from Don Mueang to Pattaya the phone showed me..

I went back into the airport queued at the Meter Taxi Stand and it was 1500 plus Fee and service charge 50.- and because he drove pretty fast (of cause with the common stop at the gas station) I gave another 200 Tip..

Something is here misunderstood by Grab..

Oh dear

Sadly to say the cost of living in the Kingdom is approaching that of Europe - the Grab taxi guy - has to pay the rent on the taxi - pay % to Grab, petrol etc etc.

And of course to take care of his / her family.

I would suspect you could easily pay the fare - it’s a long way . And they have to drive back - it’s not a one way drive .

As always drive drive down the price - hammer the locals - so colonial.

Grab is safe, not so expensive , very very convenient and the drivers seem pleasant .

Not true,

the airport taxi stand has a fixed price at the airport so how can he survive at 1500 baht?

I accept some start and some end price negotiations as it is a common rule in Thailand (if there is no fixed Price)

actually you not bather you lose your face, just make it with a smile and use right manners.

This is learned from my Thai family and has nothing to do with hammer the locals.

And any driver is pleasant if you approach him right and with manners, buying a water for the driver as well at the Gas station is for me as common as giving a tip at home and shows more Character than climbing into an overcharged Grab.

And YES, I could effort the Grab price but I have learned too much of the Thai way of life to lose my Face as a newbie Farang or one who obviously has no real Thai friends at all, they would have told you.

So, what do you pay when hailing a taxi to your glorified brothel of choice? ?

Softbank made sure Grab bought Uber in SE Asia so their investment in Grab makes them big bucks. Uber also benefits as they got a share of Grab. As Grab got a share of Uber in countries where they pulled out. All very cosey. Not hard to understand only hard to like. Didn't some movie say greed is good? Wall Street? I am happy to have to pay more taxes so the American corporations can get their taxes cut. Why wouldn't I be? I am here to be used and abused.

keep in mind it is impossible to take a taxi directly to/from suzy wong.  bangla is closed to traffic before suzy wong opens.  you'll be dropped off at one end of bangla or the other, and walk from there.  from the expat hotel, walking to suzy wong is best.  and if you want a taxi to get back, you'll have to head to the beach road end in order to get the shortest ride back.

Cough cough. Next time when you leave SW have a look to ur right side. Not far maybe 10 meter only from the SW exit is the KEE parking. Be clever and let the taxi bring you there and walk only 10 meter or park your own car there. BTW this is the most driest way in rainy season and the safest not to be seen by wifes lol.

agreed.  I suppose I should include tips in my MEA and internet bills...or maybe special line items to cover loan shark interest or legal bills for bad driving.
