If it was a military school, would they still be reported for corporal punishment? Or is that a private matter?

I think if it was a military school you'd have to wade through layers and layers of people before you were able to confront the perpetrator. You'd probably have a lot deeper cover up also with people lying to protect. What gets me is this  happened in a place where Buddhism is taught, buncha hypocrites. At least if it happened in the military context it's occurring where they're teaching you how to kill (not justifiable but understandable).

Not that it matters but what was the reason for why the corporal punishment was given ?

They snuck off and didn't attend class.

Which in the event that anything serious happened ,the director would have been held fully responsible. As happened at a school that I was at, where 2 children said they were going to the library. They went up to the roof of the building and one tried to climb down the outside of the building. He fell and died. Children sneaking off is a really serious issue for all involved. The class teacher can't go looking for them, and yet is responsible for them.

Everyone knows that temple schools have very strict discipline policies. If parents don't like it, they shouldn't send them there.
