Farms, resorts on Phetchaburi River flood after dam increases release speed

Floods have hit farms and resorts along the Phetchaburi River downstream from the Kaeng Kachan Dam after officials sped up water release from the reservoir.

 

The Phetchaburi-based 14th Irrigation Office reported that at 6am on Saturday the reservoir held 750.99 million cubic metres of water, exceeding its 710-million-cubic-metre capacity – or reaching 105.71 per cent of capacity.

 

The office said heavy rains upstream from the dam had caused water to flow into the reservoir at the rate of 22.1468 million cubic metres per day.

Exceeding the capacity resulted in the flooding of houses and farmland above the dam.

 

As a result, the Kaeng Krachan Dam increased its water release rate to 259.14 cubic metres per second, or about 22.3897 million cubic metres per day.

 

But speeding up the water release then caused the Phetchaburi River to swell and inundate farmland and resorts along the riverbanks.

 

Meanwhile, the downstream Phetchaburi Dam is releasing water at the rate of 10.7473 million cubic metres per day, the office said. Areas below that dam had not yet flooded, the office added, as the downstream portion of the river had not yet burst its banks.

Somehow this reads like a math problem:

If upstream Dam A releases 22.3897 million cubic metres per day

and

Dam B downstream releases 10.7473 million cubic metres per day,

what happens to the extra 11.7 million metres per day not released by Dam B?
