You have a good point about it creating an economic distortion and that “customer service” is not a Thai concept but the chicken & egg paradox is in play.  In the US the tips might be a motivator and might to some degree explain why in restaurants you’ll often see things like one waitress being able to take care of ten tables at a time.  Here you’d need 5 waitress and customers still would have trouble getting the attention of their waitress.  What’s not easy to unravel is whether that is due to something cultural or because a waitress in the US who waits on five times as many tables will get five times the tips.

Two ways to look at it in the modern world:

1. Americans work harder....or

2. Money talks

In Thailand no tipping is required thanks god for that not having to go thru this awkward phase every time you finish a meal or check in and out from a hotel, of course that there are mainly tourists that spoil this for everyone else, but if you must give, anywhere from 2% to 5% is advised...

In Thailand tipping is the norm.

In English please? Sorry but what you write may make sense to you buy not to anyone else. I.don't really see how it contributes to the thread.  Go to bed and sleep it off. Do us all a favour.

It would be helpful for us all if you classified your statement as requested.  Not a lot  to ask. It's a polite request. And a genuine one.

My rule

If a tip is not expected i sometimes give one. If it is expected i never give one

How do you know what is expected ? Can you read minds? What do you do when a service charge is included.? Do you apply your rule in all countries or just Thailand? Surely tipping is based on quality of service and the likelihood of you frequenting the place again. Your rule just seems contrary, meaningless.

So you tipped there?  They must have hated you for it.

From listening to Europeans in Thailand talk about tipping one would think that not only does no one in Europe tip for anything but that that they all walk around with the first Euro that they ever earned wedged between their butt cheeks.

We just pay our staff enough to live on without being dependent upon customer's genorisity

It works very well, actually

They give you the bill and you pay it, simple and easy

If there is a 15% service charge it's already included in the total so there is no guesswork involved

Yes, and everyone gets the same, regardless of performance, perfect.

People in the US are taught basic arithmetic, so there’s no guesswork involved either. We also have the option of not paying for crappy service.

Again, it works well in a country of good-hearted people. In country full of chiselers, not so much...

There ya go, the difference between the US economic model and EuroSocialism:

In capitalism, the market tells you what to pay...if you want.

In Europe, the government makes you pay. And sometimes the charges are hidden.

I was banging a waitress a few years back in Alaska. Keep in mind that she saw people from all over the world who were wealthy enough to afford coming there or were working there. In that regard and for example, keep further  in mind that s**ty rooms in AK during the tourist season (3 months, the rest is winter) run about $100 a night and the cost of everything is insane for tourists. She always classified tippers as follows, from best to worst:

1. Fellow Alaskans.

2. Other Americans, except as below.

3. Japanese...yes Japanese...they always follow the rules and will whip out a calculator if necessary.

4. Germans...she loved Germans. The waitresses used to fight over them. Japanese too

5. Filipinos. So many of them work in the service industries

6. Brits

7. Koreans

Then all the rest she classified, to use the terms here, as Cheap Charlies:

Russians. French (she couldnt stand them). Chinese. Hippie backpackers. Bunny huggers from Cali.

Years back I was in the hunting business. The guys that tipped the best (and an Alaska hunt can run 25,000) were the guys who started off as truck drivers or plumbers or whatever blue collar trade they used to raise themselves from the ranks of the proletariat (or hell even lumpenproletariat) to almost wealthy (or even 1%).

I knew this guy  who was the only son of a multimillionaire, derived from farming, ranching and minerals. He grew up working on the ranch. He never went to college and the family money didnt come until he was in his late 40s, when I know him he was 60ish. He had a private airstrip. He dressed like a farmer and looked like a schlump. We would go to the strip joints and at the end of the night he would tip the waitress $100 or more. His rationale was that he had it, they didnt so why not. The waitresses would be wiping his butt when we came in. And he looked like a bum.

What that illustrates, I dont know. Philosophy aside, if someone does me good I will do them good too.

555...now my first instinct is to respond by generic running to specific, but hey, the elephant ignores the mosquito.

Accordingly, any time you wish to engage in a test of knowledge, no Google allowed, just pick your venue. We can get an international collection of judges and witnesses off here I sure. Ill even go down to Suk for that.

They don’t have to. Most don’t have passports or have to learn English to travel. Plenty of great places to travel without ever leaving the county.

World class fishing, hunting, skiing, surfing, boating, motocross, gambling, cruising, good roads, cheap gas, inexpensive cars, great food, good jobs, great food, on and on.

From my family home in SoCal I could drive an hour and be at the beach, in the snow, in the desert, at Disneyland, on and on

If I didn’t get transferred here, I never would have come here.

Oh, and coming from SoCal, the weather here really kind of blows.

So what do you guys have going in Finland? Oh yeah, no matter how hard you work, you get the same pay, if you don’t work you free stuff. Woo-hoo!

Ignore those cheapos and sociopaths.

Waiters usually make around 10.000 baht per month. If they are yonger, they usually save up for university. With around 1k for social/health insurance, 4k for rent, 2k for transportation, another 2k for food, and around 600 for internet/phone that's definitly not an easy task. Tipping helps them a lot. I usually tip 20 Baht at the restaurant, and 10 if i just get a coffee to go. Doesn't hurt me at all, but if everyone does it it could raise their income to a level that is pretty close close to fair and decent.

But yeah, i get it.. who would <deleted> all those fat old guys if people could live off a normal job?

In Germany we have a saying: "You just wasted a great opportunity to shut up."

If you have no idea what you're talking about, don't talk about it.

In Capitalism the strong take what they want (like a CEO that decreases the market value of his company by 30% due to a bad merger and still gets 30 million in boni), and the weak earn enough to stay alive, but not remotely what they actually contribute. Bcs thanks to the increasing productivity there will always be more workers than jobs, so no need to pay them more than necessary.

Same in Europe. We're not the US here, but still moved far towards a neoliberal capitalist system with little taxes for the rich, strongly growing profits, and stagnating real salaries for the vast majority of citizens.

Maybe it's a good idea to stop getting your "knowledge" from Breitbart and FOX...

You guys crack me up.

What percentage of CEOs in the US make over $1M year?

If only they were poorer you’d be happier.
