Tall buildings suitable for stair running?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm looking for an apartment block or condo or any other type of high-rise building which has accessible stairs and also a lift without keycard access (I don't want to wreck my legs running back down).  Ideally it'd be higher than 20 stories and somewhere within a few BTS stations of Onnut, but I'll take suggestions from anywhere in Bangkok.

Most new/high-end condos these days seem to have keycard access for the front doors and lifts.  So I guess I'll probably be looking at older buildings or cheap buildings where they leave the door open most of the time.

I know security might be a problem at some buildings but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

I wish I could do that in my building.  Not only will you have the keycard issue, but once inside the stairwell (fire escape) the door is locked (can only open it from the corridor) and you can’t get out.

Yes, I'm not talking about the building I live in (where the door is always left open and there are communal stairs, but only 7 stories).

For what it's worth I've never understood what the purpose of guards is, even when they are awake.  Nor keycard access on the main door when anybody can just wait for somebody to come along and open it for them.

Sure...you could wait for someone to open the door in my building and walk through but that would only put you in the elevator lobby which also has keycard access where you are only able to access the floor you live on, the pool/gym/laundry floor and the ground floor (when leaving your unit and going out).  It’s a double edged sword as if someone is visiting, I have to meet them in the lobby (can’t buzz them in) and when they leave, I have to go to the elevator so they can get to the ground floor.   You might have better luck in a commercial building.

We have security and keycard access to prevent idiots like you pounding up our stairs and disturbing us.

Not sure how heavy you are Sir but I don't pound anywhere.

Yes keycard access to the main door isn't a problem, it's keycard access on individual floors, or in the lift that is a problem.

I was thinking hotels might be a better bet, or like you say, office blocks.  I was hoping to get some suggestions here so I didn't have to go exploring.

We'll hear what you are doing and immediately complain to the condo management and have you removed and banned from ever accessing the condo again.

How will you hear me?  Find something better to do with your time than moan at strangers on the internet.  Life is too short for that.

I'm not moaning at you....I'm laughing at you because no condo is going to put up with your noise or selfishness.

So you're not going to tell me how you are going to hear me running up stairs, then?

I didn't ask for a condo, I asked for a condo, apartment, or any other high-rise building.  Read properly before making useless posts, it will save you time and me time too.

There's one called Golden Mount but it's about an hour from my place and obviously no lift so coming back down will wreck the joints.  I think they charge foreigners too.  Buddhist philosophies...

If I wasn't bothered about a lift I'd go to the nearest stadium and run up and down the stands.

I hope you find a way to exercise properly as I do that every day too but the pounding of your shoes no matter how quiet will annoy the residents of any building for sure.

I've found the only ways to exercise in Bangkok are by using a gym or swimming.....best of luck on your search however.

I rarely wear shoes to run, it's bad for injuries and shin splints.  I wouldn't be wearing any shoes when running on stairs.  Even if I were to be wearing shoes I never make any noise when running uphill, and I've never noticed anybody else making any noise when running uphill, either.  Downhill or on the flat, yes, but not uphill.  Maybe you're used to treadmills, those things always make a lot of noise even when running on an incline.

Do you have any suggestions for buildings in Bangkok with unrestricted staircases and lifts, ronniepickering?

Brilliant topic. I do this. But I no longer live in Bangkok I am afraid, so I cannot advise you on suitable buildings. If you want somewhere in Chonburi, I can recommend.

Problem with most older high rises in Bangkok is that each stair step is of different height, putting your rhythm off and stumbling all the time. But you could check out the Landmark building on Sukhumvit. Any commercial office building like Pacific Place also on Sukhumvit. The older car parks also have uneven steps, but newer should be ok if you can stand the exhaust fumes from cars.

Have you ever actually climbed the stairs in your condo?   There is no 'pounding' at all when someone is going up and the OP will use the lift to go down (not that going down causes any pounding either).

To the OP,  you'd love the building I'm in.   24 floors of great stairs to climb, unfortunately as a non resident they wouldn't let you in.

Running up and down stairs in most places in Thailand is only going to be suitable for the wee guys with small feet.

When I go to my regular Guest house in Pattaya, I always book the first floor as it is awkward for me even walking up the stairs with my size 11s, never mind running.?

Foot size makes very little difference, the only part of your foot that should contact the step is the front or ball of your foot.

So that he can trespass on other people’s property where he has no right to be

Really?  So everybody walking into a hotel is trespassing?  An office block?  Mall?  Why have I never seen any reports of these people being prosecuted?  I would have thought Thaivisa would lap up those stories, yet nothing.

So you want 20 stories, why not just use yours and go up/down 3 times? If we had strangers coming in our condo stairwell doing this they'd be out on their arse by the second story.

Because it's too many breaks, I'd want ideally 10 minutes of continuous climbing with no rest stops, which would be about 50 floors.  But I'd settle for around half that.  7 stories would be less than a minute and not worthwhile I think.

Nobody would know because nobody uses the stairs.  Even if they did notice, most people in Bangkok are Thai and generally speaking they aren't as uppity as the aging foreigners on Thaivisa forum.  They let people get on with their own lives.  Not to mention the huge boom in running amongst Thais in Thailand in the last few years, half of them would probably join in.
