Chiang Mai tram project: Investors sought just for proposed red line

Chiang Mai News reported that plans for the tram in the northern Thai city were first mooted in the mid 1990s.

 

There is still no tram - or light rail transit as it is now referred to.

 

The authorities have decided that seeking investment for three lines - the red, blue and green - is too much.

 

So they are readjusting this investment opportunity just for the red line. If they concentrate on that they hope to finally get the scheme off the ground.

 

Each line is about 12 kms long and would include an above ground network outside the city center and below ground in the center.

 

The red line is set to run from Nakorn Ping Hospital in the north of the city via key places such as the 700 Year Stadium and Chiang Mai airport to Big C at Hang Dong in the south.

 

The multi billion dollar plans are still being discussed a quarter of a century after they were first proposed.

 

The government is angling for private investment in such projects in a number of Thai cities.

Suckers invited to hand over money so the Provincial king pins can cream the kickbacks from the contracts financed by said investors. One doesn't need a magnifying glass to see through this nice little scam opportunity.

So, each line will have different gauges and tech and vendors like the bus system, and to a lesser extent the train system in Bangkok?

In a main national newspaper today they reported that MRTA (operating the MRT in Bangkok) has been allowed by royal decree to run the project of the light rail in CM. Not clear what "allowed" means.

China will be stepping in or one of their Chinese companies funded through the governments back door. I really would hope Japan steps up if any country.

In any case, " multi billion dollar plans" are not happening in CM.
