Doi Inthanon, the highest mountain in Thailand and a popular tourist destination, saw the mercury plunge to 6 Celsius degree on Friday morning.

National Park chief Rung Hiranwong said it was the first time since summer that the temperature had dropped that low, although it was much to the pleasure of visitors who got up early and were treated to a beautiful sunrise.

Rung said the cold weather had arrived in the North much sooner than usual this year.

He said a sea mist had descended on the Kiew Mae Pan viewpoint, where the temperature droped to 9C .

Rung said tourists had started returning in big numbers to Doi Inthanon and many liked to visit Ban Mae Klang Luang village, where the paddy rice fields were a rich green, and the maple forest, where the leaves started changing colour as a sign of the impending cold weather.

Rung said the average temperature at the Royal Agricultural station Inthanon was about 14 C and that was comfortable for tourists to inspect the various crops there.
