South Pattaya residents billed 350,000 baht to get running water

PATTAYA:--Despite Pattaya’s booming growth, some South Pattaya residents still don’t have running water.

Following a volley of complaints to the Pattaya Mail, a group of homeowners of Khopai Soi 11 got a visit from Sutat Nutchpan, director of the Provincial Waterworks Authority’s Pattaya office and his staff.

He was shocked to find out that numerous homes in the heavily developed South Pattaya neighborhood have not had running tap water for 20 years.

But what he told them next didn’t make the neighbors feel any better: If they want water, it will cost them more than 350,000 baht.

Are there not a couple of big apartment blocks at the end of that Soi, one of which the photo in the article is taking in front of. Surely  they should take some responsibility for placing such pressure on the water supply?

Who paid for the first water pipe that was too small to service all the homes? Who is the responsible person who miscalculated the pipe size for the first installation?

Of course this all comes down to lack of “proper” government oversight. No housing or commercial project should be approved without proper utility supply and parking. But naturally that would be asking too much in the land of open hand.

Infrastructure charges should be levied on every new tap & toilet, and connected after payment. Water rates paid after connection, it's not rocket science. The transparent database should show receipts /charges against the property. No payment - no connection.

agreed.  there is no "urban planning" and few competent inspectors or even an inspection system with guidelines in place
