A group of foreign detainees sit with police in a Friday press briefing at Nana Plaza hotel in Bangkok.

BANGKOK — More than 500 foreigners were arrested in another nationwide raid, police said Friday.

A crackdown on illegal immigrants seemed to gain intensity as the latest arrests almost doubled last week’s record numbers. A total of 528 foreigners were rounded up yesterday from 307 locations countrywide including Bangkok’s Nana and Sampeng areas, according to deputy immigration chief Maj. Gen. Itthipol Itthisarnronchai.

  • Probably not , that group of people are likely to have legitimate visas .

  • Agree. The guys from EU, USA etc who are on overstay are more likely to be living quietly somewhere low profile and not in their 20's/30's hanging around in groups in public view.

I think this is as much about corruption as it is soley immigration issues.

Just how many were found/suspected to have "bought" their stay ?

There is a further report that 237 rogue pigeons were also detained by police, but this cannot be confirmed.

I'm kind of getting tired of this pre election "we want to look good" nationalistic abuse.

They are just taking people off the street because it's picture time.

I also don't agree with, "well if you haven't done anything wrong, it doesn't affect you" logic.

Many TV posters were jumping with joy when , a few years ago , when they started clamping down on the tourist visa runners , those who stayed long term on tourist visas .

Now the clampdowns are effecting them, they disapprove of the clampdowns

Just those fitting the profile would make sense but maybe the whites were also checked.

What makes you think that people staying long on tourist visas are being affected, where did you come up with that?

I am staying long on tourist visas and that's not what concerns me, they can bl#w me as far as I am concerned since I am not on overstay.

It's the vibe of a nanny state I am having a problem with, along with racial profiling, this coming from one of the most corrupted institutions, Royal Thai Police, and a non democratic administration.

I just can't imagine what IDC looks like nowadays.

15 years ago was 50/70 to a cell. I did see see 1 cell with only 2 expat females in at the time.

Well on that logic it affects everybody, regardless of the type of visa they are on.

So your logic is: "let's just stop everybody see what's going on?".

Mmm. Great.

It didn't occur to you that perhaps there were no Chinese found to be breaking any laws?

By the way, it's not called Chinatown because it's full of illegal Chinese!  And most of them are Thais of Chinese extraction.

What has Prawit's build or family origins got to do with anything?

yeah its hideous to follow arsenal, anyone know petty crimes, kinda becomes a huge umbrella to arrest you for anything, "hey look that foreigner crossing the road," Yeah, arrest him for petty crimes!"

no, you dont say, all these chinese origin people owning businesses and land, but i am pretty god damn sure there are indians who have thai passports as well who own land and businesses. But yeah like every chinese origin person will be legal, i think not especially in a densed population of chinatown. And still not 1 chinese origin person arrested not even for 'petty crimes'

Yes, some of them even illegal ones involving bought IDs belonging to dead Thais....  That's at least how some Chinese get their Thai passports, as has been reported in the news here lately.

They arent "stopping everybody" though .

They are targeting specific groups where illegal activity is suspected

Better watch your back Big Joke, your 2IC is getting a photo op and we know where that leads.

probably 65 africans and one token white guy in there looking nervous..

Funny how we've heard nothing lately, AFAIK, about what all these raids have meant in terms of impact on the IDC, and the extent to which all these people they're rounding up either are or are not actually getting put on airplanes for deportation to their home countries.

They get popped in Immigration raid arrests, and that seems to be the last that's ever heard about that.  Kind of makes you wonder, if all of them really do end up getting kicked out of the country, or just perhaps, manage to make some payment and then quietly disappear back to their prior lives.
