Repair service for MEX 4 burner electric hob in CM

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Suddenly the whole hob is not working (not individual elements, the whole hob). About 5 years old, never had any problem before.

Google search for repair / service agent in Chiang Mai - no result.

Any info re repairs / service for MEX products CM members could share much appreciated. Thanks.

Is it a ceramic?

I take it you checked the usual suspects...breaker on the consumer unit, check there is power getting to it.(on light)

Mex products are sold at every big box store, I would go to one and ask for advice on repairs.

The ON light on the ceramic top is off.

Since I posted above I've checked the main breaker box. The labels are all in Thai so I can't read them.

One breaker had tripped to the OFF position, I flipped it to the ON position got a quick buzz /fizzing noise and it tripped itself immediately back to the OFF.

At this point I'm assuming the problem is in the ceramic top unit in the kitchen bench. (please tell me if this is wrong.)

Further just discovered our maid gave the cooking top a big clean yesterday with lots of water so perhaps water has gone down into the wiring under the unit or into the circular switches on the side of the ceramic top, and that's what's causing the problem.

We will go to HomePro on the Superhighway tomorrow morning, where we bought the unit, and seek some further advice about repairs / service.

Thanks for your reply, appreciated.

Sounds like you have narrowed it down.

First, shoot the maid, she would only deny it anyway.

There is a chance that if it has been soaked that it will dry out. Keep the breaker off in the meantime.

If you have access to any exposed wiring underneath a hairdryer can speed up the drying out.

I have a problem with a Mex brand exhaust fan.  I went to HomePro and they told me I have to contact service to come to the house.  They gave me the same number as Post #3

MEX Service Center in Bangkok...Tel. 02-8178999.

I've called the Bkk number, they indicated we will have to send the whole unit to their MEX BKK service centre, about 1 month turn around.

Then another lady from MEX called me and apologized for the first response and indicated they do have a service man in CM and he will call then visit. That's about 5 hours ago still waiting, patience, patience.

Meanwhile son called HomePro on the Superhighway, Receptionist said 'cannot help' so son went to HomePro and got a CM number to call, local guy coming to the house late afternoon.

Step by step...

Further, my Thai son went to HomePro on the Superhighway, the staff say there is only one MEX service center in Thailand in Bkk, and in the next breath two staff start showing my son a MEX brochure try to convince him to buy a new hob, 21,900Baht.

Son persists with questions about who to contact in MEX in Bkk, after some confusion the HomePro staff say that customers have to call or e.mail to MEX Bkk and request a queue number for the next visit of MEX technical staff to CM.

They say Bkk MEX staff come to CM for one day every month, quickly check the faulty etc., products and give an approx. quotation, and a timeline which is normally 30+ days for the repaired unit to be returned to the customer in CM.

MEX from Bkk say their monthly visit to CM has just been completed so next visit about 30 days from now, then 30+days for repairs. so total of 60+ days. Patience, patience...

Yep, its like pulling teeth I know.

One thing that you really should look at when buying anything really is what happens if it breaks, motorbikes for example, stick to Honda Yamaha, cars for example don't buy a Ford, dare I say electric is fine but ceramic becomes specialist. a gas bottle is generally the best option.

You have to follow the locals really because they always can service.

Otherwise you need to be a competent diy-er. so many threads on the housing forum about people buying regular taps Western taps that they cannot find a washer for, or a water pump they bought from Lazada cos it was cheap.

Then theres the second most popular phone in the world a Huawei.....not a big hit here as no one repairs them!

Not having a go really, what you need is a solution and it seems that you need to carry on being patient.

Its a ballache but can it be removed? is it just plugged in....could take it to Amorn and ask them if they can identify the problem part...then at least you know if you can buy it or let the service team know to bring it.

Thanks, all good points.

In fact 5 or 6 years ago when we bought the hob (from HomePro Superhighway) we bought a package: oven, hob, exhaust fan and double sink, all MEX, good price, and as part of our deliberations we did ask the HomePro staff if MEX had a service center in Chiang Mai. The answer was a resounding YES.

The hob has a pressed steel box or body (only about 3.5CM thick) with all the parts inside the body and well sealed onto the black glass upper top. We've had a good look whether the body can be pried away from the black glass top and it looks to be quite difficult, with concern whether something might be damaged in the opening process. And then, could we put it all back together satisfactorily?

The wiring is proper 3 phase wiring, rather than just plug into any socket, and the whole village is, house by house properly earthed. My son got the village electrician to come to look and he separated the three wires which come with the hob from the wiring coming out of the wall, so that he would then remove the hob from the purpose cut hole in the granite counter top, that's when we discovered it's all packaged and sealed inside the body / box, with no inner parts / electronics showing.

However taking it to AMORN is a good suggestion and I will do that tomorrow. I'm guessing you mean the AMORN solar shop on the opposite side of the Superhighway, can you please confirm that's the correct AMORN shop?

Thanks.

Solar shop is news to me! I was actually thinking of Amorn by the moat next to the Samsung service centre, or even the one inside BigC hang dong on ground floor.

Good if they have a solar service centre
