kidney stone questions

Featured Replies

I have recurring renal stone pain, usually quite bad. Will fly to Europe in a few weeks, starting to worry what would happen if i got one of those attacks on the plane. Acetaminophen, NSAID, Tramadol never works, only Spasmofen (Methylscopolamine+Codeine+Morphine+Papaverine+Noscapine) has helped me so far. Is it available in Thailand? And, how much is a CT urinary tract with contrast at one of the major private hospitals, like Bumrungrad?

Can only say paid 27k at Vejthani Hospital 2 months ago for whole abdomen w/contrast and enema (cancer search) but believe estimated price was about 35k (they normally quote high before procedures).

CT with contrast at  Bumrungrad likely around  30K.

However renal stone can also be diagnosed with simple ultrasound, just a couple thousand baht.

Spasmofen is not available in Thailand. There are some antispasmodic drugs (without codeine or papaverine) available.

I doubt you have recurrent pain from the same unpassed stone and gather you are not in pain now.  If you are not in pain now there may nto be much point in investing in an ultrasound let alone a costly CT.

Likely you have a history of recurring stones (each one, of course, causing pain). The best preventive is to stay very, very well hydrated.

If you know the type of stones you tend to form there may be dietary measures as well that will help.

Thank you Sheryl!

Although the pain has gone doesn’t mean the stone has passed. It is possible to have silent or painless obstruction from a stone that can cause renal failure.

That said, i understand that not all people with recurrent kidney stones run to the hospital for CT scan every time they have symptoms. However, the last months or so, I've had repeated sharp pain from my left flank and groin. I have a feeling that the stone hasn't passed yet, and I'll soon go on a long haul flight.  If I indeed have a stone stuck in my left ureter(?), I would like to get rid of it asap. Ultrasonography is a good suggestion since it's cheaper and easier. It doesn't tell if there's an obstruction, but if there are no stones, all good.

To bad about Spasmofen, I'll look for the antispasmodic drug you mentioned.
