Driver killed, seven passengers injured in Ayutthaya van-pickup collision

The driver was killed and seven passengers injured when a passenger van hit the rear of a pickup truck that was changing lanes to park on an Ayutthaya road on Wednesday morning.
 

Police said the accident happened at 6am on the Bangkok-bound Asia highway in Tambon Ban Wa in Ayutthaya's Bang Pa-in district at 6am.

Sitthichai Sanamphan, 57, the driver of the Ban Mee-Bangkok van, died at hospital.

 

Police said the van hit the rear of a pickup truck driven by Chawalit Chaithip, 45, causing the pickup to flip.

 

Chawalit, who was not injured, said that he was steering his pickup the kerb towards after developing brake problems when it was hit by the van.

 

Police believe the van was speeding but they have yet to interrogate the passengers to establish the cause of the accident.

Seems unusual - someone pulling over because of a brake problem?

I wonder was the pickup in the inside lane at the time when the van hit it?

Its very rare not to see these vans speeding and changing lanes all the time which is probably why there are so many accidents involving these vans .

Central barriers gov is promoting would not have prevented this. Enforcement of law is too much to consider. Besides, should be some brown envelopes in any "road improvement" plan.

Of course they believe it. By law the van must be fitted with a GPS tracking system monitored by the Department of Land Traffic Vehicles Dept so the police must have read the data????

Interrogate the passengers.....have they not been through enough stress for one day. Interview may have been a better word.

Brake failure ,speeding minivan,how about getting a service once in a while,oh of course that would cost money.

no way a central reservation would have stopped this,  but of course central reservations are a lot easier to handle than the HOT POTATO of enforcing driving laws.

At the risk of being accused of being pedantic, I believe the truck is not actually a "pick-up / bakkie / ute", but probably a mid 1980s ISUZU ELF, somewhat bigger. .I reckon the van must have been really nipping along in order to toss this rig on its side.

Both could be largely reduced if common sense solutions were applied. And because no such plans will be put in place in our lifetimes, we become further desensitized each time they happen.

It is probably the only way the barriers will get built, unfortunately! 

 

Re the crash itself, I was always taught to be able to stop in half the clear distance in front of you. I suspect that the driver was travelling too fast for the conditions.
