What is better? Cars made in Thailand or foreign imports?

Sanook Auto posed the question as to what is better: Cars made in the kingdom or imports?

In a less than detailed piece on their "Sanook Auto" platform they decided that standards of production in places like Germany were very high but Thailand models were also up to scratch.

They advised people buying cars made abroad to think about local driving conditions and weather. And cautioned that when it comes to foreign models the wait for spare parts can be an issue.

They said that Thailand was producing cars for both the domestic and export markets.

In the first three months of 2018 539,690 vehicles were made - up 11% on the previous year.

They gave a list of companies that make cars in Thailand: Daihatsu, Ford, GM (Daewoo, Opal, Chevrolet), Honda, Isuzu, Mazda, MG, Nissan, Tata, Thairung, Volvo, Volkswagen and Yontrakit Motors (Peugeot and Citroen). In addition many BMW and Mercedes-Benz models are made in Thailand from imported parts.

Thaivisa notes that the report forgot to mention Toyota and Suzuki.

I would guess there the same quality because they assembled in Thailand I believe and exported abroad.

It just the pricing of cars/trucks that's silly IMO new or s/h.

I thought Tesla's new model was going to able to go underwater.

There has been a recall on airbags in a lot of countries around the world lately,my car was made in Thailand and has had the airbags replaced they are deemed dangerous,I don't recall similar recalls in Thailand

It's a single seater, long and thin, good in the wet,  but won't go around corners

Go with the brand rather than the assembly location.

Two reasons why:

The global brands run their plants using their own technology, processes, and their own German/Japanese managers and senior engineers.

If its not made in Thailand then it will come from Mexico or China anyway, unless its a luxury brand.

I hardly ever see Volkswagen in Thailand.

A couple of old timers like the T-type transporters rebuilt as movable roadside cafes.

Seen in Pattaya and Bangkok.

Beetles also.

Sometimes you see modern type vans (T6?).

Passat very rare.

Made in China now.

Didnt know they still made Opal - lol.  Had an Opal Kadett back in the 70's - cheaply made but easy on gas

That would explain why I see the modern type transporters.

Quite expensive even in Germany.

Same for Passat.

They use a VW sedan ubiquitously there for Taxis, also a type of Chevy. I cant recall the model names in either case. But likely different to the west anyway.

Yep, the CD model....(Cave Dwellers)....????

I'm assuming that the manufacturer's quality control program is exactly the same regardless of the physical location of the plant.  I doubt there is a difference.

I've had airbags replaced both on a Honda CRV and a BMW 323i for free at the dealerships. I got no recall (both cars around 15 years old and I'm not the original owner), but when I went to get something else fixed, they replaced the airbags. So if you believe you have a faulty airbag, maybe it's and idea to contact you local dealer.
