Ukraine's Poroshenko - Putin wants my whole country

BERLIN (Reuters) - Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko accused Russia's Vladimir Putin of seeking to annex his entire country and called in interviews with German media for Chancellor Angela Merkel to come to Kiev's aid in the crisis.

Russia seized three Ukrainian navy ships and their crews on Sunday near the Crimean peninsula, which Moscow annexed in 2014, over what it said was their illegal entry into Russian waters - a charge Ukraine strongly refutes.

In interviews with Germany's Bild newspaper and the Funke newspaper group on Thursday, Poroshenko rejected Russia's charge that the vessels' entry into the Azov Sea - a body of water shared by Ukraine and Russia on which the Ukrainian ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk sit - was a provocation.

"Don't believe Putin's lies," he told Bild, Germany's biggest-selling paper, comparing Russia's protestations of innocence in the affair to Moscow's 2014 denial that it had soldiers in Crimea even as they moved to annex it.

"Putin wants the old Russian empire back," he said. "Crimea, Donbass, the whole country. As Russian Tsar, as he sees himself, his empire can't function without Ukraine. He sees us as his colony."

The seizure of the navy vessels drove tensions to their highest since 2015, when Moscow-backed rebels rose against the Kiev government in the eastern Donbass region, sparking a war that has killed tens of thousands.

Poroshenko called on Germany, the largest and wealthiest buyer of Moscow's gas exports, to halt the building of an undersea gas pipeline that would allow Russia to supply Germany directly, cutting out Ukraine.

"We need a strong, resolute and clear reaction to Russia's aggressive behaviour," he told Funke. "That also means stopping the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project."

Germany regards the pipeline, which is being built by Russian state-owned energy company Gazprom, as a private investment. But Merkel recently acknowledged its "political dimensions" and said Ukraine must continue to be a conduit for Russian gas sold to western Europe.

German officials said on Wednesday that their position on the pipeline remained unchanged and that talk of tighter sanctions against Moscow, demanded by the United States and many European politicians, was "premature".

Poroshenko also called for the stationing of NATO vessels in the Sea of Azov.

Poroshenko is wasting his time with Merkel, May & the French Dandy,  these bleeding hearts don't have the strength or fortitude to stand up to Putin. Everything can be fixed by remaining calm & more sanctions  ha ha ha when will they learn the only thing a bully understands is a hard punch in the face!

I agree that putin wants to annex Ukraine that’s a rough spot to be in and putin knows the time is right because of the power vacuum in the USA and Donald’s attacks on NATO

Never a chance missed to throw President Trump's name into the issue...however imagined. Pathetic and revealing.

The reason Donald comes up is putin feels empowered by Donald’s stabbing NATO in the guts and his putin boot licking it’s plane as day Donald is in Putin’s pocket

How many times were the Russians massing on Ukraine's border according to Porky, a porky who tells pork pies.

Just a ploy agreed with the US to avoid an election.

The Russian divers are still looking for the device thrown overboard before they were....watch the sparks fly when they find it.

Sure, Putin and the Russians are totally innocent, have no massed army on Ukraine's borders; were withing their lawful rights to annex The Crimea; don't provide military aide to the Ukrainian insurgents, weapons and manpower; had nothing to do with the shooting down of a civil airliner and are very good chaps and lasses.

All a nasty rumor by those CIA types.

Poroshenko is not smart enough to outplay Putin and clearly main backers like US decided to stay out of it.

Ukrainian ships did violate Russian waters, did refuse to stop and were carrying spies, SBU

The very same SBU who promised to sabotage the bridge and create chaos in Crimea.

Poroshenko was hoping for US and NATO to back him, but neither did, so he is continuing with the nonsense.

Fact is , in 2014 Poroshenko was screaming the very same thing and claiming Russian troops were in Uraine, yet no martial law was declared then, and now all over sudden Russians are invading.

The sooner West drops support for this clown the better.

Putin wants Ukrain and the Baltic States back for starters.

He's taking full advantage of the disarray between Trump and NATO, Brexit and the EU.

Smart cookie.

Only he wants to watch his back - Xi is much much smarter.

No he does not want neither Ukraine or Baltic states. A myth created by both to suck money out of EU.

all 4 living off aid and military suppprt of NATO, ie no need to pay for its own army. Very convinient and cheap position to take

If Putin wanted Ukraine for example he would have never allowed US to intervene and stage a coup.

At the very least he wants to totally control Ukraine. Of course to Putin fans that's a good thing.

Ohhh the Putin basher. Please provide evidence and support what Putin has done to gain control over Ukraine ?

No links to imaginary actions but in your own words , what has he done or what he has said or shown which indicates he wants control over Ukraine

Again and you already know this, Crimea was only part of Ukraine briefly, was always part of Russia,

East Ukraine is Russians living there, not Putin annexing or wanting to annex.

Lets try again

Stop deflecting and either have a debate with facts or do not post rubbish at all, just because you have your personal beef based on something entirely irrelevant to the matter

Ukraine was sovereign Ukraine territory. Fact.
It was stolen by Russia.
Fact.
The election there was illegal and a sham.
For it to be legal all of Ukraine would have needed to consent.
Fact.
Yes there is a separatist movement in Eastern Ukraine strongly supported by Russia.
If they fully succeed whether they become a separate country or merge with Russia is not a big difference.
You can shill for Russia all you want but that doesn't mean you're going to fool many people that aren't already Putin partisans.
I accept that you refuse to reveal your affiliation. People are free to make assumptions.
