PATTAYA:--The driver of a 10-wheeled truck died after slamming into the back of a larger truck in Pong.

Uthai Polun, 38, died at Banglamung Hospital from injuries sustained when he was trapped in his 10-wheeled Hino in the front of Caltex gas station on Highway 36 Nov. 20.

Prapat Pattawing, 48, said he was driving his 18-wheeler and turned into the gas station when Uthai crashed into the rear of his Nonthaburi-registered lorry.

He insisted he used his turn signal and claimed the dead driver was speeding or looked like he fell asleep behind the wheel.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage to determine blame.

We already KNOW it was faulty brakes.

Hwy 36 is a dangerous road. There are road works near the Sukhumvit/Banglamung end, pipe laying, making it worse. The trucks between Rayong and Laem Chabang hurtle along it. I actually live close to it and frequently have to cross it via U-Turn to get onto The Railway Line Bypass, it takes longer each week as traffic is continuous and fast.

Some of these 18-wheeler drivers drive the same as if they're driving a motorbike or car. They need to learn how to drive responsibly when operating heavy vehicles on public roads. Wishful thinking, I know, but that's the truth of the matter imho.

Speed kills - this fact seems to have failed to register on the majority of Thai drivers.
