A young male elephant previously treated for an infected wound after getting caught in a trap was unlucky a second time on Thursday – this time fatally.

It was found dead at the Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary in Chanthaburi’s Kaeng Hang Maew district, probably from a gunshot wound.

Park officials were informed of the discovery near a fruit orchard in Moo 1, Tambon Phawa.

The elephant, about three years old, had been treated on November 21 for an infected wound on the front right leg caused by a trap.

Veterinarians dispatched by the wildlife sanctuary tended to the wound at the scene, in a forest near the same village.

On Thursday the animal was found to have swollen right hindquarters which, when cut open, revealed shotgun pellets.

Tissues from internal organs were sent to a laboratory for tests to determine the cause of death.

Buddhist monks chant a prayer for the elephant as it was buried.

What part of this can be described as "luck"??? It was a deliberate attempt to hunt/ kill the animal.

When society takes no responsibility over its future then whatever happens is just down to luck.

So if you were stabbed  in the street - its just bad luck?
