Whats your attitude to this ?

Can you complain about something if its provided or given to you totally free ?

Or do you just, put it back, put it down, leave it, move on etc

Would saying something be considered rude/impolite ?

There's a difference between free lemonade and free lemonade that makes you sick.

Once when leaving Singapore by land someone stopped me to take a survey about my trip ("what did you like about S-pore?" etc) and afterwards gave me a pen-flashlight for my cooperation, the cheap crap companies have the name printed on for promotions.  I later found out it didn't work.  Would have been a better experience without the free, broken junk.

Your question has me wondering if anyone actually went back to them asking for one that worked, and what kind of scene they'd make, probably would have been funny.

Unless the OP intend on putting in a constructive criticism comments or a way to improve the free service or products i say move on...

Depends on the presentation.... If it's a pre-planned gift then you're pretty much stuck with accepting gracefully & discarding later....

If it a spur of the moment thing, declining would be more acceptable.....

Kind of that face "thang".... Easier to gauge where we came from - but not so much here....

Are you talking in general or specific place or thing?

UK law treats something fee the same as if it is paid for - i.e. it has to be fit for purpose, price has nothing to do with it.

Ok, to give some examples.... (in genenral terms)

If you were given a magazine or newspaper at an establishment or aircraft and didnt like it, would you complain or just put it down ?

If you were given a pen or other item as a freebie and it didnt work, say something ? or just toss it away ?

Websites, free to enter, you dont like the content or functionality, complain or just leave ?

A free service on the web, you get problems, complain or just go elsewhere ?

So all these are FREE, to access or use etc, but if you dont like it, do you complain or just move on ? W

Would it be impolite to complain about something thats been given or provided FREE to you ?

Why have to complain...if somebody offered me a free plate of snails (cooked or uncooked) I would politely decline their very generous offering?...(might add that I'm allergic to them).

I guess in most cases anything FREE is not really free. It's offered as a combination.

I.e. you drink somewhere a coffee and have FREE WLAN. If they wouldn't have WLAN some people wouldn't go there. It is part of the service offered. It wouldn't be fair to advertise FREE WLAN if they don't have it or it does not work correct.

And then there are free services like "let me check your oil level for free". You need more oil, let me sell it to you. But maybe I measured it incorrect and you didn't really need new oil - which was not free.

I guess there are only very few cases were something is really free.

If a free item just does not work like a pen I wouldn't complain. But if the free item causes trouble (a free drink which gives me headache) I would complain.

Very rude and impolite. If you don’t want it put it back.

“never look a gift horse in the mouth” a very old and appropriate saying

yes, in your exampled context;

'Free' is replaced by 'Complimentary' in the Business environment

There is Free as in the unasked for way

the anticipated way; monk gets food from people on the street

the 'bugga' way; he just gave me his unwanted rubbish

You mean the gift that keeps on giving.

Someone mentioned earlier this site, this site is FREE too, no subscription, so why moan and complain as I see many times, no one forces you to come here or on to any website for that matter, so again I say, is it rude and impolite to complain or should people simply dont visit !

If its the latter, then why do they keep coming back to complain ? and spoil it for others, just go.

I just dont get those people. Yes if it costs you, you have every right, but provided free ?? Shut up or leave, not that complicated is it, why spoil others time with complaining and whinging and that in my opinion goes for many things.

If its FREE dismiss it if you dont like it etc, no need to be rude or create a fuss, unless it costs you or impacts on you in some way.

I think its been said, theres no such thing as a free meal.

In Thailand actually you even must pay for many things that will fall apart quickly

but no use complaining anyway as all you get is blank stares
