Can anyone recommend windows freeware that will resize an image reducing file size dramatically while retaining dimensions and willing, relatively speaking.

 

I recall an option in Word, just can't find it.

 

There are many on my favorite shareware site, snapfiles.com but interested in opinions.

 

Im using it for a portfolio, images inserted into Word and create PDF. Not website, if at all matters.

It may depend on which office you have, but in office 360 the option is in the top tool bar within image adjust, first highlight the picture, then select the most upper left icon within 'adjust' and it will give you a few compression options.

Also, when converting to pdf you have the option to optimize the whole file which I believe will reduce the size of all the content automatically, which would be the easiest option if you have a lot of images.

Just opening a camera image in paint3D (comes with W10) and saving with a different name reduced it from 5.21MB to 2.72MB, of course YMMV.

 

Plain Paint managed 3.62MB with the same image.

This works quite well  once installed right click on the image you want resized

then select resize pictures.

The OP wants to adjust compression to reduce file size and retain image dimensions.

If your original file is some sort of uncompressed format (RAW, BMP etc) then simply saving it as a JPG file will give you a much smaller file without altering the image dimensions. When saving a JPG you also have the option of altering the compression settings, though anything below about 80% is unlikely to give a very good result. You also have the option of reducing the resolution without altering the image size but if you go below 72dpi then again the end result will probably not be very good.

 

If your file is already a JPG at 72dpi then something like RIOT will optimise it, but that will not reduce the file size very much: maybe 10-15%.

Basically if you are trying to reduce the file size of a JPG without altering the basic dimensions/resolution then you are trying to put a quart into a pint pot, which of course cannot be done without spilling something.

The free viewer IrfanView has a decent side by side compression plugin which allow you to view results. Some images will compress more than others without too much visible loss so its good have a side by side comparison.

Windows paint.  Comes with all windows as far as I know.  Easy to do.

The old Microsoft Office Picture Manager does the job if you can find it and download it.

It does the lot, resize, compress and crop plus the usual other features. But like anything good they removed it. If you can extract it from an earlier version of Windows (2003 - 2010) well and good. It is well worth the trouble.

The new Office Photo editor for Windows 10 and Windows Photos are next to useless when it comes to editing.

yes, agree! 

the engine that was used in that elder Powerpoint was magic! you could shink/expand/shink images for repeatedly ages, and the result was always perfect... nil losses

I still have that old Office Professional 2003 in me old XP laptop. Still great to use...

Resize, maintain aspect ratio.  First you would have to open the program.

That does not maintain the image dimensions. It only maintains the ratio between them.
