Phoenix police investigate after woman in coma for decade gives birth

By Barbara Goldberg

(Reuters) - Phoenix police on Saturday were investigating reports of a sexual assault after a woman who has been hospitalised in a vegetative state for the past decade gave birth.

The woman, who was incapacitated in a drowning incident, was a patient at Hacienda Healthcare when she went into labour on Dec. 29 and delivered a baby boy, according to local media. No one knew she was pregnant and healthcare staff were initially unsure why she was moaning, the reports said.

"This matter is currently under investigation by the Phoenix Police Department," Sergeant Tommy Thompson told Reuters when asked about the media reports.

Hacienda spokesman David Leibowitz said the facility had recently become aware of a "deeply disturbing incident" involving one of its residents.

He declined to say whether its staff were being asked to undergo DNA testing to identify a possible suspect, or whether the facility was taking any preventative measures to protect patients against a similar situation.

"While federal and state privacy laws prohibit us from publicly discussing a patient's health or case, Hacienda has and will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement and all the relevant regulatory agencies regarding this matter," Leibowitz said by email.

Victim advocate Tasha Menaker, chief strategy officer of the Arizona Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence, said it would be appropriate for police to run DNA tests on male employees at the facility.

Hacienda HealthCare describes itself as Arizona's leading provider of specialised health care services for medically fragile and chronically ill infants, children, teens, and young adults as well as those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

A spokesman for Arizona Governor Doug Ducey said the reports were "deeply troubling" and that the state was re-evaluating its contract and regulatory authority over Hacienda Healthcare to tighten up patient safety measures.

I am sure they will find the culprit very soon, (or at least have a name for a person of interest), I would think he has already done a bunk.

Interesting talk on the radio the other day by a forensic expert on on crime investigation, they work by trying to get a match but she suggested that samples sent to independent ancestry tracing companies have been used in criminal investigation with a great success rate.

In a country stating "in god we trust" on its banknotes, this should be deemed an immaculate conception until proof of the contrary.

My dear fellow reader. The phrase "In god we trust" does in no way says which god is meant. In the US there are many gods available. Every church has its own.

Arguable..... at the time this phrase was first penned, it was done so by Christians, ergo referencing the nailed god.... and one of the arguments for the inclusion of the term was to prevent future generations thinking that the then US was a heathen entity.

Another thought here is that it could have been a visitor not an employee, wonder what rules and cheeks they have on visitors?

Most visitors have big fat cheeks.

A vegetative state does not necessarily mean that they are on life support, so there is no plug to pull.

Maybe there is a plug to pull, maybe not. For sure she is kept artificially 'alive'.

Why is this woman still in coma, 10 years down the line?

Please pull the plug.

I had a nice born with Hydrocephalus, the prognosis was poor, she lived for 11 years, my sister in-law dotted on the child, the child was death and blind not sure if she could sense feel, could not even crawl.

She was not on any life support and my SIL cared for her at home

On diagnosis the doctors suggested letting nature take its course, just administering pain killers, my SIL went ballistic, it split the family, I for one believe that child never had a life as she had no sense of awareness of anything.

A similar issue cropped up a few months ago when my mother was admitted to hospital in a totally confused state, a few days after her admission still in a state of "non compos mentis" a doctor asked my brother about DNR (do not resuscitate), he consulted with me and my sister who recalled an incident on a previous spell in hospital when my mother found the DNR in her notes, she went balistic, so we said no to "DNR" but agreed between ourselves we would not be questioning what actions were taken (or not) if my mother died in hospital.

As much as I understand your sentiment believe it or not Protestants, Catholics, Jews,  ....and even Muslims have the same God, he just says different thing to each.

Wow! I mean I really doubt that she managed to get fat while in a vegetative state, so how did they NOT notice that she was pregnant! Obviously her being pregnant is not the first thing that comes to mind, but still! I really hope they catch the guy!

Could do, not exercising, I doubt she would look a pretty sight. probable noted that she was putting on weight but nobody (except one person) would even think she could be pregnant.

Incredible a man must really have no dignity to behave like that...

...but what a shame he will have when the police will find him

His family his colleagues will find out who he really is, help.
