Seven foreigners have been charged over illegally working as pre-wedding photographers and assistants in Phuket yesterday.

The Phuket Immigration Office Chief Col Kathatorn Kumthieg ordered officers to inspect Kathu Temple and Kata Noi Beach, popular locations for foreigner pre-wedding photo shoots.

The Phuket Immigration Office reports that all staff in the pre-wedding photo shooting team were foreigners who only held tourist visas. They have been conducting work contracted in China.

Why not call them Chinese rather than foreigners?

  • So based on this if an infirm foreigner visits Thailand with his private nurse, on tourist visas, that nurse would be breaking the law.

  • Because they could be Chinese and not foreign. Plus the crime is working while being foreign, not working while being Chinese.

I'm thinking its not to upset the sensitivities of the Chinese tourist, when quite clearly it is a Chinese wedding group?

They should check out Chiang Mai lots of them around Thapae gate

No one can work on a tourist visa or retirement visa. And a work permit is required for most everything, including volunteer work.

Chinese are foreign in Thailand

No, because Chinese is a racial type as well as a nationality.

Naw, a paper really won't take that into account. It is because they were foreigners working.

I'm not sure about that, but in this case the people were Chinese, which is a nationality composed of at least 56 ethnic groups, and are therefore foreigners when in Thailand, a completely different nationality.

Hey, after the Phuket deaths last year, let's upset the Chinese more by ruining WEDDING photo shoots.

What a joke!

The problem here is that the couples are ALWAYS walking from far away as there is no parking close to the entrance that NON paying hotel guests have to use. They are seen by the tuk tuks, taxis and everyone else. These guys with the cameras got called on by these people.

Meanwhile the  jet ski and parasail operations that illegally occupy the beaches continue without a word from any government officials.

The article didn't say that they (all) are Chinese,

just that "they have been conducting work contracted in China"

I don't see a difference between illegal tour guides and illegal wedding photographers.

There are plenty of local people in that industry who would be unhappy to be losing work to foreigners working in their profession.

Irrelevant,  Thais work this corrupt, illegal business.

Completely different government departments in charge.

what? you cant use your own photographer in Thailand?

Not if they don't have the correct visa and work permit. Same situation in Australia: you can't work there on a tourist visa, either.

Reciprocal laws in the usa would see thousands of Thai restuarants close......darn foreigners taking away jobs......not.........China will own Thailand in 100 years according to many Chineae I talk to so piss China off too much and that schedule could be accelerated.......or conversely China could pull out all investments and Thais would beg to have the Chinese come back.........hmmm......distant relatives maybe....dont forget where you came from many thousands of years ago....thats another story........and now for something completely different.............

No No, they are Overseas Chinese.

Years back in OZ, I had several friends who had fully migrated to OZ from Malaysia.

Ask them about their nationality, same response from all of them 'I'm Overseas Chinese'.

I'm probably the only one wondering how many of his family members are in the same business.

These are professional photographers. Nothing to stop your own family and friends snapping away if they travelled with you.

So it’s safe to assume they’re French?

Last trip to Phuket in the afternoon there was a wedding photo shoot going on in front of us on the beach. About an hour of various poses and some amusing pics of the bride trying to jump into the air.

Finally they left and we thought we had some peace and quiet. About an hour later the same photographer was back with another couple for some sunset pics.

Not sure if it’s the same outfit but my guess is they’ve been the source of complaints until the police finally took action.

The new law allows voluntary charity work to be done without a work permit.

Don't think so, a wheelchair, as evidence, is less attractive than  4 or 5 professional cameras with various pro grade lenses...

Are you sure about that, I don't recall seeing that mentioned.
