Temple novice found hanged in Ayutthaya

By The Nation

A novice monk was found hanged behind the crematorium of a temple in Ayutthaya’s Bang Pahan district on Monday morning in what believed to be a suicide.

Police said a monk found the body of Thalerngsak Butrkrai, 19, hanged with a nylon rope tied to a tree branch at Wat Theptharam.

Phra Sarawaut told police he could not see the novice on his return from collecting alms, so went to look for him and found the body.

Police found no sign of a physical altercation and no injuries to the body.

The monk said Thalerngsak had ordained as a novice just two months ago.

He appeared sad after visiting his family in Chaiyaphum during the New Year holiday and often complained that his family didn’t come to visit him.

The lack of mental health care, and public education, can cause people of limited financial means to seek help from wats. Troubled youth are often sent to be a monk in the hopes of curing the  affliction or in giving the family some respite. If the family was reluctant to visit, there was probably a legitimate explanation. Common sense  says that there is information about the deceased that is missing.

We had a novice hang himself at the temple I lived at in Khok Samrong, Lopburi.  He was heavy in to drugs and stealing from the donation boxes.  He left a note saying he was ashamed of what he was doing and didn't want to cause more shame on his family.  Myself and another monk found him.  It was pretty ghastly.  Don't want to go through that again.
