Police have vowed to track down the tourist to ask where he got the starfish from. Starfish are protected in Thailand only within protected areas such as national parks. Photo: Khanchit Klingklip / Seaman Freeman

PHUKET: Chalong Police today confirmed they were tracking down the tourist caught walking along Chalong Pier yesterday (Jan 22) with a starfish in a plastic bag.

The news broke after tour guide and local marine-life conservationist Khanchit Klingklip, also known by his online moniker "Seaman Freeman", posted photos of the tourist carrying the starfish on the Healthy Reefs Club Line group yesterday evening.

^ All too often, the only way to get the police to do their jobs is to publicly shame them.

Tomorrow the tour guide will front the media with the chief of police with the guide apologising and saying it was all a misunderstanding...

That court case  is not going well for the obese accused and his equally plump wife. It has been reported on, even here in TVF.

In respect to this case, the arguments from all the detractors is that this slob who took the  starfish should be left alone. Unfortunately,  every day some jerk vandalizes a  protected space or the   general environment. Just because some idiot drives around without a motorcycle helmet does not mean that the police should ignore these environmental vandalism crimes.

Again, I'm with you on protecting marine life and prosecuting people who break the rules.

Just amazing that it needs press coverage !! It's a starfish, just get on a fine the guy, job done...

Typically the drama is in the headlining .

An environmentally  concerned person takes a photo of an individual casually defying conservation law.

Reports it to the Police.

Police  say "Ok, we will/can probably  find him. ( maybe not as any priority).

Reporting individual goes  media wise as  some personal triumph.

RTP are the subject of  derision by  so many.

Why?

This 'us against them' mentality that many are exhibiting here will only lead to anger and frustration.

Meh, mostly giggles and sore fingers.
