2 year temporary driving licence

Featured Replies

I'm due to renew mine in two weeks. Anyone know if you go early you get 2 years from that date? or 2 years plus the 2 weeks?

If you go after it expires you get two years + time until your birthday.

Here on Samui you can not renew the two year temporary before it expire because the rules say you must had the license for two years.

When the temporary license was changed from one year to two years, the dumb renewal rule was corrected.

" If you go after it expires you get two years + time until your birthday. "

That's true and very useful, but there's a catch: after the expiration, don't drive anywhere at all until you get it renewed. An expired license means no insurance coverage.

Renewed my temporary driver's license and was given a 5 year license without asking...seems it was around 550 baht...

As far as I know, if you have a non-immigrant visa you will get a 5 year license when you renew.  Usually dated to your NEXT birthday after 5 years.

If you have a tourist visa, then your new license will only be for 2 years - from the date you renew it.

(Cost is 110bt per year that they give you)

Also if you have the "elite" visa you only everr get the 2 years "temporary" licence.

So, i should go 1 day after it expires to get the 2 years + days to birthday?

Seems crazy, another example of TiT?

Obviously I'm on a tourist visa hence 2 year renewal

Conflicting views on this thread, but i was expecting what you said to be correct. So if i go 2 weeks early it will be a year from then.

Edit: 2 years not 1 year

As far as I know, the 2 year license gives you 2 years from the date it is issued... if you get a new one 2 weeks before your old one expires, you will just "lose" 2 weeks.. (or go 2 weeks after the old one has expired and you'll still get 2 full years)

It's only the 5 year license that goes to your birthday..

I can't imagine WHO anyone would want a temporary driving license. Take the test, easy, just get the documents together .

after the first one, its based on the type of visa you hold only.

You don't have a choice

You need to be holding a Non-Immigrant Visa to progress from a 2 Year Temporary to a 5 Year Driving License.

I was previously on a 5 year license (which had been processed while I was here on a Work Permit). I was unable to renew this 5 year license for another 5 year license as at the time of applying I was not on a Non-Immigrant Visa (I was on the Thai Elite SE visa - which is basically the same as a Tourist Visa). Thus, I was issued with just the 2 year temporary License even though I've had driving licenses here for over 15 years.
