The Chiang Mai - Luang Prabang (Laos) services are added to Bangkok Airways' route network to cover CLMV countries which are Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam by using Chiang Mai as a strategic flying hub, according to the airline's press release.

Luang Prabang is recognized as a Unesco World Heritage Site and the city is always on top of mind for both foreigner and Thai travelers who enjoy a peaceful atmosphere and richness of local culture.

Moreover, having a link between Chiang Mai and this World Heritage City will make it easier for tourists to connect their journey to Luang Prabang (Laos) without making a stop or transit in Bangkok.

Bangkok Airways operates three flights a week (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday) with a 70-seater ATR 72-600 aircraft. The outbound flight PG983 will depart Chiang Mai International Airport at 16.30hrs and arrive Luang Prabang International Airport at 17.45hrs.

The inbound flight PG984 will depart Luang Prabang International Airport 18.30hrs and arrive Chiang Mai International Airport at 19.45hrs.

For reservations, passengers can contact Bangkok Airways 24hrs Call Center at 1771 or simply go to www.bangkokair.com for more information.

This aircraft is based in Chiang Mai and flew me many times to Mandalay/Myanmar and back. Just hope they did not seize that flight although the occupancy was rather poor.

Good and reliable airline, run by professionals with excellent ground, customer and inflight service - highly recommended and worth the surcharge over the cheapies ????

The cost with BKK connection (trip time over 6 hours) is about 15,500 baht.

Flying direct with Lao Airlines costs about 6,900 baht.

Bangkok Airways will have to beat that. Can they? I seriously doubt it.

Anyone flown from Luang Prabang to savannakhet, Laos for a fly in visa run? With direct flights from Chiangmai it might be an interesting alternative.

Not sure what the excitement is about as Lao Airlines have flown this route for 12 years that I know of. Similar aircraft, similar price and even similar time of departure.

One word of caution: Our Chinese friends have taken a liking to LP.

6000 baht plus 2,500 for Laos visa and reentry stamp or more of you're doing visa run. How can ask hour flight be so costly. Better to go to KL for visa needs. Good English and great food.

There are quite a few places like that in the world. Djakarta, Ho Chi Minh City, and St. Louis spring to mind.
