For people who aren't beach sand experts,

Woukd this happen in first world countries?

Or is it one of those pure bad luck situations ?

It would happen in first world countries if the did the same. Eventually the tides, waves and run-off from the land will always win.

Back in Australia and parts of the UK, huge rock groyne's are built at the right angle into the sea encourage sand depositing along hundreds of meters of beaches, apart from the original construction of the groyne's 'Mother Nature' takes care of the rest through Summer and Winter .... no earthworks required !

It's not so bad in North Pattaya , I do my daily exercise from Naklua down Beach rd.

I asked a police officer about the sand that had been washed away and his reply was : Don't worry, we fill up more sand......

If I recall correctly, pipes were laid when the new sand went in; presumably for drainage. I think there are uncontrolable deluges barrelling down the sois to Beach Road with nowhere to go but the beach.

Why do you think the arabs are that rich?

Funnily enough the Arabs had to import sand from Australia to build the Burj Khalifa.

Useless fact of the day ????

Now they plan to spend another 105 million baht over the next year.

Astoundingly innovatitive idea !!

These peoples grandfathers were expert at controlling water distribution and fall !

What happened ?

What did they expect? When you place drains from Sukhumvit down every major road leading to the beach along with the trash what were they expecting and yet they spend all that money for what? An expensive bandaid luckily the tourist were there they would have been washed out to the sea. To bad the officials who O.K. the deal didn't but of course while it was raining they were spending all that hard earn cash!????‍????  bunch of clowns!  Stop building roads and facilities for the Chinese to do their shopping. INFRASTRUCTURE!

Imagine if you are the proud owner of a proprty that has maintained its market value because its location is within walking distance of Pattaya beach. In the space of 2 days as well as the beach being washed away so has the value of your property. The incompetence of the local council & the nominated contractors knows no bounds, not to mention the vendors but i will. Today in Soi 3 i witnessed a Thai women emptying a wok full of old cooking oil down a drain, last week i saw another women poking a plastic carrier bag down a drain with a stick!...Many of Thailands problems go back to a lack or poor education

i have no malice or gleeful comments,

they tried and it didnt work out, pity.

but sand alone does not cut it anyway,

the wastewater without filter also prevent it from ever

becoming a wonderful beach

One has to wonder, if, it is as he appears to be saying, why didn't they spend 105 million Bath first, on correct and appropriate drainage BEFORE they wasted the 400 million putting the sand in for the incorrect drainage to wash away?

You don't understand, the project was overseen by Khun Knut who commanded the sea to stay calm and not wash the beach away, i think i have his name correct!!

King Knut or Canute. But I prefer your version. I take it you are dyslexic ????

A similar system used just 10 km south of Pattaya (On GoogleMaps)

Only way to solve the issue is for the Thais to forget this ludicrous face issue and bring in proper engineering solutions and consultants from Countries who know how to deal with such issues.

Not Somchai and his bike spanners

So many TVF experts so few solutions

Many have given a solution : Not to put a large amount of sand in front of an area where flood waters escapes

NOT TO WORRY.........

In THAILAND they love to spend money on projects, and roads as well, only to spend it again soon TO REPAIR IT, as the Thai 'Officials' KNOW..... that is just more opportunity to siphon off percentages into their own (grafter) pockets.

You really cannot help laughing at their stupidity, why on earth did they not ask Canute Oh Cha to protect them? Did they not bless their beach properly with the correct amulets or does God simply hate them all.

All in good time my friend....he's still got a few days left of his 7 promised to fixed the Northern smog problem. Had to visit Pattaya City Hall last week and I spotted a yellowing poster of the Pattaya Skytrain project muted many moons ago. What's the bet the project budget gets topped up every year for scoping studies and the like and then washes down to mia nois or VIP club privileges at Poseidon or the like.

Strange what some people find amusing,

I just seen on the news that parts of Nevada have been washed away by floodwaters...that must be really hilarious alltogether?

I agree, it's not hilarious, but the Thais and particularly the gang down in Pattaya have a way of doing things that normal thinking people just look at and shake their heads. Expert planning?

As for Nevada, it also has questionable engineering projects..

Who could possibly have seen this coming???? I was roundly condemned for my forecast by the minister of finance and war. Now to get a perfect tone for my ‘told ya’.

Yep, engineered Swales is the answer, with bridges for the beach goers to cross them.

The headline is wrong. It should read THB 400 million washed into some bank accounts; in all fairness - for how stupid does the city administration of Pattaya hold its citizens and voters.

Latter might be more alert next time as it might cost them another THB 400 million for their pristine, family resort which is visited for its nature - my foot! See you further first ........
