Koh Phi Phi Police have been cracking down on illegal workers on the island’s and have arrested a British national along with five Burmese yesterday in Krabi.

Police arrested 28 year old British man Benjamin Richard Stone at a restaurant on Koh Phi Phi yesterday.

The arrested follows police receiving a tip-off that the suspect was illegally selling tour packages to tourists without a work permit. He is facing charges of illegally working in Thailand. Stone is currently denying the charge.

Do even tourists need a work permit nowadays?

at least better than the previous parades of hundreds of (run out of luck) aliens.

For sure competition will complain and tip off Immigration if a alien sale tours. Not sure about the burmese, there are thousands that the Industry need to keep running.

Maybe the culprit didn't realise the tourists needed a work permit before selling them a tour package, so thats why hes denying the charges. At least that's how I read the article. Or did I?

There has always been tons of tourists working on Phi Phi.

"The arrests follows police receiving a tip-off that the suspect was illegally selling tour packages to tourists without a work permit"

Why would the tourists have to have a work permit for being tourists? Maybe he should  have sold the tickets legally? Let's eat grandma !

Off course was there no other foreigner involved who saw his bookings going down the drain. Tip off, my ar_e.

Personally, I have complete sympathy for those arrested.  People should be able to work freely wherever they are, since earning an honest living is widely regarded as something that benefits both the individual (usually) and society as a whole.  The so called crims are in any case invariably doing jobs that the locals can't or won't do.

Only if he pay taxes for his income, which I doubt he can do with a tourist visa.

With latest change to work permits, from memory i believe they have relaxed punishments for working without WP from jail and deportation to just a fine. Do not recall the new rules but almost certain they made it less of an offense

Well, that again is the fault of the authorities, isn't it?  Basically, if he is barred from working he can't join the system.  But, hey, let's just go on stigmatizing ordinary people whilst accentuating just how wonderful the system is.

He's not barred from working. He should just apply for a WP and go from there. He can't work with a tourist visa, but then he's still a kid and didn't know, or didn't care about this.

The short shorts look more than just kind of gay.

Wherever you're from, they let foreigners in your country to work legally on tourist visas? The guy should be deported and banned, just another lowlife looking for a free ride from responsibility.

h.t.t.p.s://www.thaiembassy.com/thailand/thailand-tourist-visa.php

"Visiting Thailand as a Tourist

When you visit Thailand for the purpose of leisure, sight-seeing and personal enlightenment, you are a tourist.  . A  tourist is not allowed to work or conduct business in Thailand .     A tourist needs a tourist visa so you can stay in Thailand for a period of 15 or 30 days while doing her own explorations and excursions in the kingdom."

It is common sense that in a foreign country you probably need a permit to work.

Some get away with it and some don't. He didn't and now he faces the possibility of a ban.
