My Surface Pro 4 (about 4 years old) no longer recognises anything from it’s USB port.

I’ve ran the hardware troubleshooter, updated drivers, ran the Microsoft Surface Diagnostic Tool, uninstalled all assoc. drivers and rebooted for automatic install... but all to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can try your luck contacting Microsoft support. If you are lucky, you can get a replacement even the warranty has finished.

First, you will have to determine if it's a hardware problem or a software problem.

(It's probably a software problem.)

Does the port still have power?

Can it power external speakers or will it spin up an external HDD?

Try resetting the USBs...

Find Device Manager.

Expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers

Right click each driver named USB Root Hub and select Properties.

Go to Power Management tab.
Uncheck 'Allow the computer to turn off this... etc...

Do this for all USB Root Hub drivers.

Restart your Surface Pro.

If that doesn't work, and you have uninstalled the drivers to invoke the automatic re-install after a re-boot, and THAT hasn't worked, either, it's probably a hardware issue. ????

Just out of interest, what do you most need the USB port for?

Many thanks KB for your suggestions. I unchecked the Power Management Boxes and uninstalled/rebooted/auto-reinstalled all USB Root Hub drivers...problem still exists ☹️

It no longer powers anything including my iPhone, Windows Phone, iPod, external HDD and 4 x flash drives.

I also used 3 different USB cables.

ALL above mentioned devices, cables and flash drives work perfectly when connected to another PC’s USB port.

Please try this: Dip a cotton swab into a bottle of rubbing alcohol and gently rub the swab on the USB contacts in the port. This will clean the USB port of grime and residue that is collecting on it. After a while, the grime and residue collecting on the electrical connection of the USB port will degrade the connection. And report back.

Ants, or other tiny animals, or dust are often the cause of such problems.

If that doesn't work, you must have a look at the connector from the inside. It could be a loose wire, or the USB connector has a poor connection to the motherboard. If that's not the case, you've got to replace the USB connector. A good address is one of the Advice stores you can find all over Thailand.

P.S. Please switch the power off, if possible take the battery out and the power supply off.

FYI surface pros have only 1 usb port and the repairability is 0. Only way is to open the display and you might risk cracking it. Try your luck with Microsoft support, Pro 4 is known to have many issues so you might get a replacement even its out of warranty.

If you have access to another laptop or pc, try to create a bootable flash drive.  Power down the surface pro, insert the flash drive and power it back on.  If it is set to try to boot the flashdrive it would attempt to do so.  This would show if it is a software problem or not.

As a last gasp measure (and if you really don't want to give up your Surface device) there are such things as 'WiFi USB hubs'.

Basically, you plug a USB box into your router at home, set it up on your Surface, then plug USB devices into the small box instead of your Surface Pro.

I don't know how compatible they would be with Windows 10 as the ones I have seen are a bit old.
