Probably cos everyone's sick to death of the Thai pricing system, namely ripping a new one everytime they open their mouths..... Just come back from Phuket, never again....... In typical Thai fashion, there's no limit to their greed...... Killling the goose boys, it's nearly done, back to the paddy soon.......

….and I thought the story would be about foreigners cleaning up the local beaches.....they don't seem to complain when that happens!

Is that because they don't steal the job from Thais cleaning up the beach?

  • Are these the same jobs as in pattaya where dozens of taxis just sit there will not turn on the meter, refuse to go a short distances and charge you as they were the only taxi in Pattaya?...

Perhaps it’s because the foreigners value their lives enough not to put them into the hands of the morons who call themselves drivers in Thailand

Well let the Thai's learn English or French or German, then they might? get the work

Aside from the environmental degradation and overbuilding, this present thread illustrates very well what happens when such beautiful places become too popular. It's not a phenomenon confined to Thailand, though the locals do take the overcharging to extremes. These days I go elsewhere.

this is stupid. that ain't a business. guy could be just taxiing family and they pay a little fuel. i wasn't bothered to read on. Seems stupid and racist to me.

Thais always winging but never do any work if given half a chance. Who's to blame?

The local taxi mafia who overcharge for little service !!

Wow!

if a foreigner has to take the job of a Thai then that person should be fined and kicked out of the country

Alternate headline:

Tired of being treated like scum by Thai travel agents and drivers, tourists turn to illegal foreign guides on Ko Samui

This is pure capitalism, not stealing money or stealing jobs! Singapure, Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Korea are richer than Thailand and they have more money. Why? Because they have free market and capitalism. More bans, more regulations, state intervention in economy, high taxes, envy and greed = poor country. Market and costumers should decide about who can work like this, not snitches and bureaucrats. Economic well- being doesn't come from socialism, state intervensions, bans, fooling foreigners or from prostitution. It comes from hard work, resource and economic freedom.

Is the foreign service better and cheaper? Horrible!

The local tuk-tuk/taxi drivers have banned themselves by overcharging and kicking customers ...

Only because the Thais are too lazy and happy to live in their own crap they don't pick up their rubbish.  But foreigners taking jobs ? A different story. Why the foreigners are probably doing an honest days work for an honest days pay if the allegations are true so guess the Thais are only upset because they are losing out on their daily scamming of foreigners.

That is exactly my thought. they are only complaining because they are not able to scam people. if they could still scam people they wouldn't be complaining. they are being a true hypocrite. complain about a possible foreigner breaking the law preventing them from breaking the law themselves. Asking the authorities to step in and stop people like us from even just lending a hand to a fellow traveler but want to be left alone when they scam and illegally overcharge people. Last time I checked. It is not working or illegal to offer someone a ride and for them to chip in some gas money. That or taking friends and or family around in your own car.

Isn't competition a real b!tch when it's in a protected service industry.  Thai taxi services are lucky no foreigners really make an effort to take their jobs.  Because the foreign guys would own the market in less than 30 days...

Samui is a gross rip-off; there is nothing worse than arriving at an airport with no metered taxis. Disgraceful.

Russian and Chinese operators always have a partner. The ones that don't will be shut down. And if someone feels like it, the ones with Thai partners will be shut down as well.

This has all happened before and it will all happen again.

OK ok... Aliens will never do anything wrong. Especially the aliens who are supposed to have arrived from the 'developed' world! So keep quiet Thai natives, the aliens are doing a rescue mission for you at their own expense, albeit most who cannot gather 800k Baht.

Yeah I don’t think this is true !!

Why would someone want to pay a cheap pick up to take them somewhere when they can be overcharged by a taxi that won’t put the meter on , has no insurance , no license , is drunk or high !! ????

I would pay extra to have a foreigner drive me somewhere in a sane manner, and not be a total knob about it, or try to renegotiate the fare after the ride started, which is what happened to me the last time some thai drove me somewhere. 50 kilograms of baggage, and what am I going to do...get out on sukhumvit with all that stuff?

Employment isn’t a right, it’s an offer made by an employer to the person they want to employ. As such it is a private matter.

One would choose a non Thai presumably because language skills are important, for example for safety.

This is not the main reason why Thais are feeling the pinch.

And if people are using alternative services this might be because they are fed up of being ripped off.

Cleaning is not a protected occupation or a much sort after job.

Cleaning must be a really highly skilled occupation in Thailand, as there are very few people actually involved in this job.

The truth is, if they let foreigners work here, Thailand would finally become the great country it should be !

They should rather worry about no more foreigners wanting to come to Thailand for retirement or tourism....

Perhaps the foreigners are scared to ride with a Thai given their road safety record and all.

Looks like you have  a cause. Get on it Dick Tracy!

No one is stealing jobs. They are just competing for the same job. Normal business in free countries.
