Admit it, Walmart US beats Thai big boxes hands down..

Recommended Posts

I know it is cool to bash walmart...and it leaves a lot to be desired, but i had a bad visit to Stinkro yesterday, and it occurred to me that Walmart US beats them in every possible category except good looking cashiers.  Prices have just gone over the top, for the quality, and selection in LOS.  Ripoff import taxes are a huge killer of the shopping experience..and then add a lot of stuff that cant be trusted.  Costco is in japan and korea..if they came here, it would be a huge game changer....but in the meantime, they could start playing fair on taxes.

I assume this is a libelous / derogatory reference to Makro.

At least we don't have a Thai "People of Makro"  http://www.peopleofwalmart.com/

Or do we??

even funnier that the entire world bashes them, but as stated..they beat the Thai big box stores in every single category.  Couldn't have been Makro I was talking about...no one has ever been in a Makro that smelled awful, and they have such a fine selection of artificial cheese, I may have to splurge and pay 700 thb for a four dollar bottle of wine to go with my processed cheese food, will go great with hot dogs and white bread.

Walmart is unique....Usually regionally influenced for stocking + many choices with a familiar layout.....In reality, there aren't any stores in the states that match up either....

When we're over there RVing they are a good one stop "stock up" stop....We shop as we pass by.....Always easy parking and access....

When we get to smaller population areas there are still some locally owned supermarkets that are well stocked hidden gems....

People love to talk smack about Walmart, but you can get almost anything with free delivery to your hotel in two days, five at the outside.

I can order crap the day before I leave Thailand and often pick it up at the desk when I check in...

Walmart is kinda odd.

When I lived in California, they were awful, low life's, generally skanky.

Then here in the Midwest, they are actually pretty nice, look more like a Target, or should I say Targé

Costco blows them away on quality foods..now in Japan and Korea.  Trader Joes' would be 100 times bigger than Taco Smell...people camping, perhaps.

Really nothing stopping you from opening one...

I didn't make that assumption.

What caused you to make it?

we got some pretty good Wal Marts here in CA. Quality really does vary with the area though.  San Diego Poway is a nice one as are one or two up in Orange County LA.

My friends that live and own houses here in CA all have Costco membership so I sometimes end up going shopping with them.   Some of their quality really is pretty good and with decent prices, although as a single, I don't bother with a membership since I don't buy much and don't really need a pack of 8 steaks in my freezer.  I love the Costco "Buffet" and all the little food sample stations.  Still can't beat the $1.50 hot dog with soda on the way out.  Cool air, warm sunny Southern California.

We don't have Costco here but have Sams Club which is exactly the same.

I try to resist the temptation to go into the damn place since even though I resolve myself to only go in to buy toilet paper and cat food, I always seem to come out with a cart full of stuff and my wallet $300 lighter!

Since you asked:

According to a grocery-store ranking from Consumer Reports, the higher membership costs at Costco might be worth it – it ranked higher than Sam’s Club in cleanliness, meat and produce quality, customer service, store-brand quality, and prices of organic items.

With Trump's tariff plans, maybe Walmart won't be able to rely so much on "cheap" Chinese goods.

"I love the Costco "Buffet" and all the little food sample stations."

We knew a woman who worked one of the sample stations. She said there was a regular crowd that hit the store to "lunch" off the sample carts.

will have almost zero impact on grocery prices....maybe a little bit on the seafood, which the chinese also managed to ruin...Costco sold my brother some rancid pork ribs...to compensate him, they gave him a family lifetime membership.(would be lucky to get a frown and a refund here} .the organic frozen blueberries at 10 bucks for 4 pounds...and that finlandia swiss cheese...and almonds/pecans....all pure gold here in the mango.

Walmart sells the same crap as everyone else, they just sell more. Raising import duties on ChiiiNa will raise prices across the board.

correct, and hopefully get the chinese out of the food chain.  Heard lobster prices were down in maine for that reason.  Also could cause deflationary pressure on soybeans and some other commodoties...farmers will complain, as usual not willing to change.

You know I was thinking about that, contrasting our buying habits when we are in Thailand versus when we are in the US.

Both me any my wife are a lot more cautious buying anything in Thailand, simply because generally there is a zero return policy.

When we go into a Sams Club, Target, Walmart, it's more, "eh what the heck we can always return it", then you get lazy and never return anything!

Yeah that annual membership really saves us a ton of cash!!!!!!!!!

I don't seem to have any real difficulty returning stuff here.
