An Idiots Guide to the Retirement Extension process at Samui Immigration Office

Featured Replies

Change in 90-days address report date

Normally the 90-dyays address report is restarted when receiving a 1-year extension of stay – at least so for retirement extension for me during the last 18 years – but this year mine was not, it still follows after my last 90-days address report in September, instead of being restarted end of October, when I was permitted another year in Land-of-Smiles. It might be a change, as most other immigration offices is said to let the 90-days address report run in it's own cycle.

Have other experienced the same, or is it a mistake with my extension of stay?

If it helps anyone, here are the latest requirements for Marriage extension at Samui Immigration.

And...yes papers should be submitted in same order as the list.

Method of applying same as mentioned earlier for retirement extension except you keep your passport and have to go back one month later for the stamp.

Also of course for the marriage extension there will be a visit to your home by officials soon after your application.

Did you require an appointment as some other posters have mentioned?  I'm up for my yearly extension but when I went through the process  last year I didnt require an appointment

Appointment is new since "last year", where you just needed to come early to obtain a queue-number.

Thanks, khun Per. I actually found that out myself today before seeing your message, they told me you’re required to book the appointment 45 days before your Non-O visa’s expiry date.

Same in Khon Kaen - extension is not an automatic new 90 days - used to be in Chiang Mai years ago. When I extended in October this year, I asked the IO if she would also give me a new 90 days - because it was within 14 days she did it then.

oldmanstan is correct.

My extension isn't due for renewal until 19/01, but I was passing immigration and decided to pop in and get the forms TM7, TM8 etc.

I told the lady with the short hair when my extension was due for renewal and asked when I should book an appointment. She told me 45 day before, and that I should hurry up and do it now as they are running out of spaces. She gave me a flyer with QR code on it to book the appointment online.

She also pointed me to an app called "SIMM HUB" which seems to be  Surat thani Immigration Hub.

I downloaded it and tried to book an appointment, but everything greyed out for Dec and Jan except 25,26,29,30 December. I tried booking 29th and get "Server Error". Now it's locked up and telling me I need to go to immigration and get it reset. FFS!!!

I also tried the QR code on the flyer, and that takes you to Surat's Line account. Gives a phone number and a web address all in Thai. Nothing ever easy. How have you guys booked your appointments?

In person. The lady wit short hair in the info-office downstairs had an old-fashioned handwritten booking list – several paper sheets, seems like one for each day or something like that – when I booked my extension application for October; however, by that time one month in advance was enough, which might havce to do with how many applications there usually is for a given time of the year.

Edit, addition: Seems like extension of stay now require three visits to the immigration office. 1) for booking and get this years menu, the list of paperwork to be supplied. 2) for actual application upstairs. 3) for picking up passport one week to 10 days later.

Add one more visit for me. She didn’t seem interested in making a booking for me, even though I went when quiet, late afternoon to get the forms. Why she couldn’t do it while I was there I don’t know.

I downloaded the app she suggested, registered passport and it then froze. Message says I need to go to Immigration to get my registration on the app reset. They are closed today, so I will go after lunch on Monday. Try and make appointment in person.

They are making it almost impossible to do nowadays. I mean, having to start process 45 days in advance? Only ten appointments per day? WTF is going on there?

If needing to make an appointment to renew Non Imm O retirement extension, don't bother using the SIMM HUB app that they are pushing. It crashes and says you need to go to immigration to get it reset. But when you go there, they tell you it can't be done there and that to make an appointment  you need to use the LINE app that you get from the QR code they are handing out on flyers.

I'm not really happy having to scan my passport into LINE, but there was no other way to get an appointment.

The appointments seem to be fully booked all through December and January. My extension expires 19/01, but after trying many dates in January, the only day I could get was 17/01. So pretty full with almost six weeks still to go.

A further update:

I made a mistake with my booking and booked 17th Feb, not 17th Jan.  This was too late, so I had to return to immigration again.

I was told told by an Officer there that, "Next time, you must book appointment up to 60 days before extension expiry. But appointment date cannot be more than 45 days before date of expiry."

This being due to the fact that even though I tried to book an appointment 5-6 weeks before expiry, everything was fully booked.

Give yourselves plenty of time guys.

Hi everyone, I’m new on this thread, and am looking for some clarity on item 2 below.  Any help would be much appreciated.  My understanding of the immigration requirements for bank documents:

    1.   A bank letter confirming the 800,000-baht balance, valid for 7 days.

    2.   Deposit 100 baht (or show some activity) on the same day as the immigration application

and update the bank book.  Then here is the tricky part………..

The instructions say to have the bank print a 12-month savings account statement on the

same day.   However, Bangkok Bank branch can only print a 6-month statement on the

same day.   If it has to be 12-month on the same day, then I have to request a 12-month

statement via the Bangkok Bank App on my cell phone and then print that.

    3.   Provide a copy of the updated bank book showing 12 months of transactions, updated on

the same day as the application.

If you are using the 800,000 baht bank deposit method, the 3 month statement together with the bank letter is approved. However, you still need an updated bankbook – "same day as application" – but I've always got my Bangkok Bank-letter and statement the day before and my deposit-bank book updated at that time, which has so far always been accepted. I use a separate fixed account for my retirement extension deposit, which makes it more easy to check and giving a better interest than a normal savings account.

The 12-month bank statement is needed if you use the income method, where you transfer minimum 65,000 baht every month. However, the first time you apply for an extension of stay on a non-immigrant O-visa, only two month is required, but thereafter it is a 12- month statement every year applying for a new one year extension of stay.

As Bangkok bank can only provide with up to six month in a local branch, a 12-month statement is needed from the head-office in Bangkok. They can send it as PDF attached to en E-mail, so you can obtain it within a few days, but to be on the safe side,  request the statement a couple of weeks in advance. There is a (relative small) fee for a 12-month statement, if I remember correct, it is 200 baht. If you want a bank-printed statement, it will normally be send to the branch on Samui, where you need to pick it up from.

The immigration office wish copies of all pages in a bankbook – no magtter what is written in the document requirements – if you don't have photo copies of all pages, you will be asked to get them before they will handle your application. Remember, that photo copies need to be portrait-format and wet-signed by you. They also began to ask for photo copies of all pages in a passport, not only since last entry-stamp into Thailand.

Thanks KhunPer.     I've got the 800,000 banked in a savings account (not fixed account).     This year, one of the Immigration Employees upstairs told my wife that I also needed a 12 month statement.   I thought I could just do this via the Bangkok Bank App (which is also emailed to me and looks just like the 6 months that the bank does), but you are saying that I should go to the Bangkok Bank and have them do it for me and then email it to me ?    Thanks                (Note:  The 12 month statement that I do via the App gets emailed to me within a few minutes........just tried it again to make sure).

@OliveOil, if you have the deposit in a savings account – perhaps even mixed with other deposits and withdrawals – the immigration office might wish to check that the balance was 800,000 baht or higher 3 months after your last extension of stay began, not below 400,000 baht thereafter, and then again 800,000 baht before your next application for extension of stay.

Therefore a fixed account – preferably 12 month if you can afford to have the 800,000 baht permanently deposited – makes it easier for everybody.

Yes, you need to visit your Bangkok Bank branch and apply for a 12-month statement. However, if you use Bangkok Bank's Internet iBanking, you can yourself print 6-months statements. If you remember to do it at least twice a year, you will in future have statements for all 12-months.

PS: I needed a 12-month statement for the last year for my Bangkok Bank savings account – and had not printed regularly..., so a visit to the bank was needed – not for the immigration, but for the revenue department that wish to check foreign transfers and that income tax has been paid. Remember to file to tax return form if you stay here for more than 180 days in a year, even all your income is taxed abroad...:whistling:

Thanks again.   I've had the Fixed account before for a marriage visa; however, it presented a problem for the Immigration Officer because I had too many batches and she couldn't reconcile that I indeed had the proper money in the bank.  We even had the Bank Manager talk to her to confirm, but she still couldn't reconcile it.   Hence I switched to a Savings Account in which I have 800,000 baht permanently deposited............I never deposit nor withdraw from that account.

I think I'm going to go to Bangkok Bank and order the 12 month statement and then do the iBanking statement on the day of my appointment just to be safe...............would have it on me in case they ask for it.   Also, I would thus skip the 6 month statement on the day of the appointment as I already would have the 12 month statement.

I did get my Tax Id and have filed my first time for year end 2024 at the Revenue Department in Nathon.

KhunPer.

I am using the THB800,000 method, and for the last three years they have demanded a 12 month statement. Indeed two times out of the last three years they have refused a three month statement and sent me away to get a twelve month one.

Strange, do you use a fixed account? I've never ever provided more than a 3-month bank statement for my 12-months fixed account and copies of all pages of my bankbook – and I've always been accepted...:whistling:

I have always used a savings account, and copies of all pages of passbook.  Deposit money into account on morning of immigration visit, and passbook updated. Last year I asked for a 12 month statement, but they only gave me a 3 month one. I didn't notice until the lady downstairs at immigration checked my papers. She sent me away again. So I had to pay for another one to be done. Now i will always ask for a 12 month one.

Using a savings account might be the problem. It's easy to withdraw funds, and they also need to check that you kept the 800k baht deposit three month after extension of stay was granted, and that the deposited funds never is below 400k baht, and that the account is topped up again two month before the next application for extensions of stay. The latter can however be seen ion a 3-months statements.

I normally advise to use a 12-month fixed account for the bank deposit method, if you can afford to keep 800k baht in deposit all year. It also gives a little better interest, which I withdraw annually, so I always a have clean deposit of 800k baht in the bank book.

Are there any new requirements at Samui Immigration for a Multiple Re-entry Permit?

Other than completed TM.8, 2x photos, copy passport photo page, copy visa and last entry stamp.

Playing safe as I have my extension renewal appointment on Friday.

Went to Samui Immigration this afternoon as I was missing a required document. No.13 on the list.

The lady with the short hair crossed out several on my list, telling me “No longer required.”

See attached form for what she crossed out:

Items 8, 9,10, 12,13.

Wow, thanks for sharing – great news and improvement...👍 – 8, 9, 10 plus 12 and 13 no longer required (enlarged image of list below)...

So, no more visit to hospital for health check (8);

no need for copy of rental agreement or yellow house book (9);

no more arguments about artistic impression for a hand drawn map (10);

and also no big smile on selfie with house number (12);

and no signature on the earlier attached police order (13).

KhunPer. That is what she told me, and she drew a line through them on my list. But I am going tomorrow (Friday) to renew my retirement extension so will see what happens and report back.

My Samui appointment is on the 15th. I received the same list with the same entries scored out so a little bit less hassle this year 😁

Went to renew my extension this morning. Be aware that there seems to be a new version of Form STM.2.

Even though I only went and collected all the forms, (the TM.7 and all the others were stapled together) in December, the lady downstairs with the short hair ripped my one out, gave me a new one, and told me to fill that one in.

Hopefully I have the correct version as the checker downstairs stapled mines together only last week. Did you need to provide the 12 month bank statement? if so did you get it stamped and signed from the branch? I've only managed to get a 6 month statement signed and stamped from the branch and an emailed 12 month statement, but this is not signed or stamped - the branch won't do it.

Yes. I got a 12 month statement and bank letter from K-bank earlier this week.

Not sure if this is a new thing or not, but the lady at immigration told me, “Next time, you need to sign everything with blue pen. Not black.”

I have been doing everything in black for years. Never a problem until now. Another customer was told the same thing..

Sounds like Bangkok Bank, their branches can only print 6-months statement. You can order a 12-month in the branch, and pick it up about a week after; they will probably sign it. I've never tried to order a signed 12-month statement; so far, I've managed with 3-months statement and copy of all pages in bank book – they ask me for all pages, even it says "show last 12-months" in the information sheet – but I use the 800k deposit method with funds in a fixed 12-month account. My last extension was in October 2025.

Does anyone have a screenshot of the line app QR? The simm hub app is horrible.

Cheers
