Starting in July this year, the Thai military is introducing a modified territorial defence course, which will place less emphasis on military knowledge and more on general knowledge, for high school and university students who want to avoid conscription.

An informed military source said that the modified course, or Ror Dor, is the result of a brain storming session held for 225 territorial defence course trainers from around the country.

Under the revised course, the proportion of military knowledge, which was previously 70%, will be reduced to 55% and the general knowledge content will be increased 45%.  This modified course will be applied only to subjects taught in classrooms, which will take 80 hours to complete.

The thinking being, the less they know, the less likely they are going to want to avoid conscription?

Yeah, that's going to work...

... general knowledge

I wonder if that might include some presentations and discussions (repeat and some discussions) about civil society, the need and benefits of respecting the law, protection of freedom of speech, the value of open discussion, the value of democracy and what it looks like (and doesn't look like) in real situations, and building and protecting the pillars of democracy...

Is there any evidence that the present or even future courses help Thai students progress through life? They only have the smart students enlist in the course and these are the ones who are going to "make it" anyway?

The reality is that these kids are locked to the military until age 44 or so to be called back anytime the junta wants. They don't realize it but essentially they need to be careful as can be tried as a military person. It is BS for the kids who do not want to be associated or do any real military time. But what honest options do they have? Pick a red or black card?
