There is an easy solution to avoid paying a lot of money. When they stop you the first time don't pay cash, insist on a ticket. They will collect your driver license and give you the ticket.

  • a helmet cam is the best defence against getting ripped off  at a road block.  Same with cars, front and back dash cams.  It's amazing how often you just get waved through when they see that they are

  • Its getting close to months end, they need to collect enough revenue so it can be shared out on the first of next month

And for any future stop that ticket is your don't-pay-continue-card.

They can't collect your driver license anymore. They can only look at the ticket. And that's it.

Officially you should pay that ticket (I think) within 10 days. But I had it already a year or so in my pocket and never paid another fine. And when I finally paid it was the original amount - something like 400B (for a year).

Nothing to do with being a Police State...

...everything to do with corrupt mo-fo's taking any opportunity to fleece anyone at any opportunity.

Did you have to give up any tea money? or was everything in perfect order and you were reluctantly waved along?

I was stopped also near Big C .. Rode on the right lane of Sukhumvit in order to make U turn  at traffic light.. Cop asked my license and yelled that I get ticket for riding on right lane.. I told him to be allowed to ride there, and pointed to a Thai guy who got stopped in same lane and could continue after showing license.. Then he wanted to grab my license, but I told him he could just only look at it..Next he told me he wanted to make a picture of my license only...I did not give him that chance.Presumably he wanted it in  order to write my details on his ticket book.. Then I harshly told him that I lived here over 20 years (In Thai language) and that I clearly understood what he was planning to do..Next he asked my road tax sticker, and while I lifted my seat in order to get it, he was called away by his superior on the pavement.. Next he returned and walking past me he told me to go while  mentioning  "you have big problem now "  I just replied that he might got it...

Around CNX they use the same BIB checkpoint areas, every day same times. just so easy to do a mental map of where they are and ride on other roads to bypass them , easy peasy. My tuk tuk man who sees them all the time also mentioned (a) they are often within 100 metres of a police station due to being lazy in walking (b) you must wear a helmet cam and they will waive you on, they dont want selfies taking corruption money.

Yep!, only in the land of smiles do you get this kind of love and attention....they are on us like white on rice...

Not so easy in Pattaya..they do have their usual spots  but not everyday  they go for weeks or months with no stops then bam out of the blue  back again !   they also like to  stop on Sukhumvit where you have no choice short of turning round and drive against traffic flow ...or to set up just round a blind corner  and under the fly-over  where again you have no chance to avoid them.

The most I got stopped was twice in a day  and that wasn't any, fun 4 times is just getting silly.

Did they attempt to fine you for anything?

  • Popular Post

My personal record was 7 times on one hour long trip on my scooter in to  Asoke. The only saving grace was zero in fines and they were all very pleasant about it.

The stop is only for 30 seconds, if you have the right documents. Inconvenient but not a problem.

Same in Rayong, always outside the cop shop.  I just use the back road. Same on the intersection of the 332 and 331, outside the cop shop, never anywhere else.

I love the Thai police...they keep me safe from scammers and highway robbers...????

The joy of living in Isaan, nobody gives a sh1t where you come from. I've been stopped twice in 14 years, the last time I didn't have my license with me but the wife said we are on our way to visit someone in hospital, the copper smiled, saluted and waved us on.

Remember the proposed "Points System?"  Anyone want to know it won't work.  <laughs>

Don't do anything wrong, carry your licence and make sure your bike/car is road legal. I have never been stopped and fined for no reason.

I have been stopped at road blocks many times. Shown licence and waved on. I have been stopped for speeding and fined but that was deserved.

Last night on Sukhumvit observed 3 Traffic police pull up at an intersection on their motorcycles and immediately start pulling over many motocycles and start causing a traffic jam build up on sukhumvit where the traffic for once seemed to be flowing smoothly.

I live NE of Surin and went through 4 checkpoints on my way to Kap Choeng IM one day. Would have been 5, but they were removing the cones in Kap Choeng.  Checked window sticker, seat belt use and drivers license at each stop.
