Im thinking of taking the thai family to Myanmar via mae sot was wondering do they need a passport or just there I'd cards i know Laos they just needed there I'd cards

But Thais can't just enter with their passport, they need to get a proper Myanmar visa.

No personal experience at Mae Sot, but if entering Myanmar at Mae Sai, they can get a border pass at the amphoe which allows them to enter Myanmar, then they also don't need a passport, just their id card. If you only plan to stay in the border area with them, then they should get this border pass

Thais can enter Myanmar visa free for 14 days when flying in. Not 100% certain of the situation when entering overland but suspect the same applies.

 

If you want to play safe apply for an e visa which will cost you $50 or make a call to the Embassy.
