Buakao baht busses, do they always turn towards 2nd Rd?

I would like to take a northbound Songteaw all the way to Klang and then hopefully get off near 2nd Rd.

Has anyone ever had a northbound baht bus turn right/East on Klang and head towards Sukhumvit or is it a safe bet they always go West?

I have only ever known them turn left towards 2nd Rd. If they did turn right it is not the longest of walks to 2nd Road if you get off straight away; 5 minutes.

North, East, West..I asked an American friend one time why not just say " turn left or right".

He was giving me directions and told me to go down to the bottom of the road, head eastward for about 2 blocks then head west etc., etc.,I told him I don't carry a compass with me...He looked at me like I had two heads on my shoulders?

Most of their street layouts refer to compass points. They know where the sun rises and sets, in the UK we never see it.

I also was confused by a 4-way stop junction, told I could go when it was my turn to go based on when I arrived at the junction. I asked 'am I supposed to make notes?'

sure, but you would think for 12 baht - - an additional 20% - they should take you anywhere you want... that is only reasonable - right?

"reasonable" we are in Thailand you know............:whistling:

Ask the driver, and all the other passengers. If they are game, fumble around for that extra 2 baht. The driver could put it towards some chiclets.

I don't blame him!

Surely you know in which direction you're facing?

If you're at Pattaya Tai (south), going to Klang (Central) is heading north, going to Nua (North) is heading further north.

Looking out to sea is west - that's where the sun sets - you can tell even if it's overcast (like it often is here in UK)

Once you know where any one point of the compass is (and from above 2 are clear) it becomes obvious.

As for just saying turn left or right...how does the director know which direction you're facing?  Points of the compass are absolute not relative.

Actually if you are heading down Beach Road or Second, you are heading as much East as North, but let us not quibble.

Normally they all go back to the 2nd road. If they go to the Sukhumvit Road they often will stop working and kick you out. I also have sometimes the experience that they simply stop to make a break. All this happens mostly if I am the only customer left. In all such cases I will leave the bus without paying. It is not because of the money. It is because of their behavior. Some drivers get aggressive but I don't care and walk away.

Of course - unless a road is dead straight that will always be the case but do you not agree that in general, my comments above are true?

I first came across the "American way" of giving directions when I lived in the US in the eighties. For a while it confused me but once I got used to it, I realised that it is less ambiguous than our usual method in UK.  I do it all the time now and it amuses me when my fellow Brits are amused - see my Profile Member Title! ????

As for not being able to see the sun, I found that people in Boston, where the climate is similar to UK, use the same method as those in Texas where it is very different.

And....the same method is used at night too!

Used to give directions by naming pubs, none left now!

But generally UK guys are not as aware of compass quarters as those in the USA.... and their street numbering etc makes finding places easy too, corner of 101st North and 44th East sort of thing.

You can take any baht bus and go anywhere you want if it's empty, but the price can go up to 150 baht from for example Soi Buakao to the Northern Bus Terminal.

Yes. I know - but you would think people would be happy with a 20% raise... it's actually been years since I have been in Pattaya.

Wouldn't work cause everyone is going in different directions. ie. When it gets to Pattaya klang, some want to go left, some right and some want to go up soi 14. Who gets to choose which way it goes? I love the 10 baht songthaews and the routes they travel.

I use google maps live when I don't know where I'm going and so far it has worked pretty much everywhere I have travelled.

I'm still confused because Pattaya is on the eastern side of Thailand but the sun sets over the ocean!

Only Thais could do that! 5555

Might I assume you are from the USA?
