Root canal Post Crown - Phuket

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Never really had any dental problems before, but today a piece of my tooth broke off, no real pain.

The Dentist at first said it could be filled, but as she cleaned it all out it started to bleed, She put in a temporary filling and sent me to there other branch to the specialist for xray and checking re possible root canal.  They said I need root canal (tooth 27 upper molar I think), post and crown. 10K for root canal, 5,000 for post and then 15,000 for ceramic crown. I have a copy of the xray.

I'd like to shop around a bit so looking for recommendation to trim the price a bit. Mission Hospital quoted a price range starting a bit less but upper range higher. Another local dentist was 12k for the root, 5k post and 10k crown (silver coloured though). Phuket Town/South areas are better.

Any one else I should try? Thanks

go to public hospital that has dental wing/clinic

bangkok has one - Hospital of the Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University

dont know where if any in phuket

was told the same once by Thai dentist - went to one in Australia and needed just a filing.

sounds like a scam to me - dentist needed specialist for xray??

... besides; who wants to pay all that much? - for a tooth that is going to shatter ion about another 7 years

Root canal kills the tooth, and it (the root) becomes brittle, in the above timeframe.

Remember; that what little there is (was) left of the root, is expected to support the Post that goes in.

You may find that With a little luck the “temporary filling” actually lasts 5-10 years or more without complication.

If there is no significant sensitivity/pain after the new filling, it may be worthwhile considering no further action unless circumstances change.

whatever you do, take it seriously ...a dentist doesn't do root canals...they have to call in specialist called

an endodontist. A poorly done root canal can come back to haunt you years later if they dont clean up meticulously.

Take a course of antibiotics after....a week of amoxicillin and a week of metronidazole. Bacteria from root can al procedures can sometimes get close to blood vessels in the heart and that's when trouble starts.

I would try and get to bkk.

Way, way overdone.

It won't cost much to get a second opinion. If the tooth is salvageable then you'll get away with a normal crown (I paid 8000 baht just last week in Chalong).

I was quoted 1,000 for temporary fix, scale & polish, followed by 1,000 next day to do real filling, but she could not get the bleed to stop after she cleaned the damage and was concerned the temporary filling would not hold, so paid only 1,000. The other branch they sent me to said the bleed had stopped, they tightened the temporary fill and added another layer, did xray and consult for 300 Baht.

I thought a temporary filling was just a few weeks, not much pain just a little ache but maybe from the work?

Root canal at Mission is about 4k.

They quoted me 8-12K for root over the phone, 500 for dentist to review my xray

Looking for recommendations, but where to try but don't really want to pay 300-500 baht each for a few opinions. Theres too much choice and can't seem to find many recommendations.

Thanks for replies

I found a recommendation for phuketdndental, near Tesco Lotus, can't seem to find the post again now.

Called them and was quoted 10K root, 5K post, crown 8K, they will do consultation free if I already have the xray. The good thing here is the dentist to do root canal is there every weekday, other places seems to be just certain days.

Anyone used them before? Thanks

Went to phuketdndental, they said pretty much the same as the last dentist. prices as above except they might change the crown recommendation after they start, 8k,12k,18K depending on the material, cheapest I think is metal but tooth coloured so porcelain? the higher prices have some gold content. All have 2 year guarantee, not really sure what the differences are and if its worth while, not something I have any experience with.

Dentist here. ????

My wife and I go to Rang Hill Dental Clinic.    http://www.ranghilldentalclinic.com/

They're not the cheapest but all the work we've had done has been very well done, including root canal ... and I checked the before and after x-rays.

Any crown you get should fit as well as any other. The cheapest will be a non-precious metal, silver-coloured crown. Since the tooth is 27 (near the back on the top left) nobody will ever see the crown and you can save money there.

If you want to save the tooth, get the root filling and the cheapest crown. If it's done well you may have it for the rest of your life.

If you have an x-ray and can send me an image, I'll be happy to give you an opinion. You can pm me.

????

Thanks Tapster,

The first dentist I went to was 15K for the crown which was all ceramic, which I read was not the strongest and was less bothered about the look as its at the top back, I think they tend to do more cosmetic work than anything. Called around a few and prices were quite similar with the exception of Vachira but they had a 12 month wait list.

So went to phuketdndental and had the first half (1of2) of the RC on Wednedsday, she said it was deep and some gum had come into the space. After she said I needed some extra surgery to trim the gum/bone for the crown, from googling later I think this would be crown lengthening but will confirm at my next appointment next Tuesday. I was in no pain before, for a couple of days after the area was sore, still is a little. I maybe have some minor pain in the opposite side, sometimes I think jaw sometime upper area could be me though looking for problems that don't really exist and being over sensitive to it.

Other than the look is there any advantage to having a crown with some gold content? obviously the cost is a consideration as its not cheap but don't want to regret the decision in a couple of years time. I also intend so space out the time between RC and crown a bit.
