webfact Posted October 10, 2019 Posted October 10, 2019 Serial phone scammer arrested by Tourist Police after 5 million baht in cons Picture: Daily News Daily News reported that a 37 year old Thai phone scammer responsible for a series of cons worth 5 million baht was arrested by the Tourist Police. Kanchanaburi native Sonthaya was arrested at a resort in Song Phee Nong district of Suphanburi after an informant notified the police. Sonthaya was involved in phoning relatives of people to claim that they had been involved in accidents and needed money to be transferred to help them out. He had already been prosecuted for such scamming but had not learned his lesson, said Daily News, mentioning there were several warrants out for his arrest. Thaivisa notes that the operations of the tourist police in Thailand stretch beyond matters involving visitors to the kingdom. This is because penalties for Thais are not strict enough, people know it will only result in a slap on the wrist or close to it 1
