WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday he hopes he can mediate between Turkey and the Kurds following Turkey's offensive on U.S.-allied Kurds in northeast Syria.

 

Trump, who pulled U.S. troops out of the area before the Turkish attack, said on Twitter that the United States had three options.

 

"We have one of three choices: Send in thousands of troops and win Militarily, hit Turkey very hard Financially and with Sanctions, or mediate a deal between Turkey and the Kurds!" Trump said.

 

"I hope we can mediate," Trump said when asked about the options by reporters at the White House.

 

"Turkey knows where I stand," he said. Trump said he did not think Americans wanted to see the U.S. military sent back into the region.

 

"We are going to possibly do something very very tough with respect to sanctions and other financial things," Trump said without elaborating.

 

Trump ordered the pullback after a phone call with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday, prompting rare criticism from senior figures in his own Republican Party who accuse him of deserting loyal U.S. allies - the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) led by Kurdish YPG militia. The SDF have been the main allies of U.S. forces on the ground in the battle against Islamic State since 2014.

 

Trump has called the Turkish assault a "bad idea," said he did not endorse it, and threatened to devastate the NATO ally's economy if Ankara's incursion into Syria wipes out the Kurdish population there.

No, he cannot. If there ever was a reason for using article 25 (removal of the president), this is it; horrible judgement, violate all agreements with the Kurds (who, by the way, their female soldiers were feared by ISIS) and mental illness.

A man of little world knowledge who doesn't read anything I feel sure Trump has no idea about the animosity between the Turks and the Kurds and the visceral hatred they have for each other. Like many of these old middle east conflicts this goes back a long way and will not be 'solved' by a quick battle or even by long term economic sanctions. These enemies wont be thinking rationally about their dispute, its all emotional. I dont think Trump has any idea what he has unleashed.

This man could not mediate a dispute between a cub scout leader, and his cubs. He has failed so miserably at virtually anything he has touched. He needs to be removed for the national safety of the nation.

 

Even for a man who has executed one of the most miserable and divisive foreign policies in memory, this decision is the biggest mistake he has ever made. Throwing an ally under the bus, after they have sacrificed 11,000 of their own people? We had only a few hundred special advisors left in Syria. It was costing less than a single trip to Mar a Lago to support this. 

 

Just another in a series of blunders this man of mediocrity has made. His lack of compassion and decency is mind boggling, even for him.

Trump has spent his entire presidency attacking and dismantling the achievements of Obama, but what really rankles him is the Nobel prize that Obama won.  No matter what he does, he can't destroy that - the best he can do is even the score and be awarded one himself.  The ongoing, and so far failed, attempt to cozy up to Kim Jong Un was his strongest move in that direction, with him and his fans openly suggesting it is Nobel worthy.  Now, it seems he's escalated to a whole new level by starting a conflict so he can mediate and bring 'peace'.  I wonder who gave him that idea?

seems they were promised an independent state in 1920, and allies then forgot about that, unlike about other states.

It might have been Nobel worthy if it had resulted in a treaty, disarmament, or even more control over Kim. Instead, with a box of high end chocolates, and a few well placed compliments, Kim has gotten Trump off his back permanently. Who is the smart one here? Who is the stable genius? A great negotiator? How about a big sucker? How about a little boy, who has the emotional development of a 13 year old, cannot negotiate his way out of a paper bag to save his own life, and a man completely lacking in vision, compassion, smarts, grace, nobility, competence and dignity.

misspelled.  I do hope that the Kurds can get to a safe place and not get
